The world is completely urbanized. In the Age of Rebirth, the world is recovering from millenia of cataclysm and has finally reached a state of high technology for maybe the first time on Second Shem (accounts vary). Space travel is now possible, and colonization has begun on Ruiz, the other world. Nations are referred to merely as "Sectors," as everything is simply one massive city, on ground, underwater, below ground, even on the moons. Intricate gates and passport systems keep people in line.

In this Age, technocrats rule. The ones with the best technology are the leaders of the world. The ones who refuse to join in are outcasts from most societies and are seen as savages. Churches who don't embrace technology are referred to as "savage religions." Magic users who don't combine their arts with technology are called "backward mages."

The media is king. Information is king. Computers are king. Technology is king. Super-advanced magitech, faithtech, voidtech, psitech, and cybertech are the bleeding edge. And the most powerful corporations run the world, treating Sectors like puppets.

Because of the omnipresence and ultimate marketing skill of Nu Mart and their insidious slogan, the words "new" and "knew" have been replaced by "nu" in all instances.
