The Mimieux family has lived in the Vieux Terre region of Galdun for four generations. Maelys is the eldest of three children, including her brother Artaud (who works as a librarian) and her sister Joilette (who works as a legal scribe). Her parents were cloth merchants.
Maelys went to a local academy for young women until she was in her mid-teens, when she met the travelling storyteller Gaston du Balfour. Her parents had passed away in the year or so before she met him, and in their absence, she turned to others for guidance. Gaston took her under his wing and taught her everything he knew about the art of storytelling and speaking to crowds. He introduced her to nobles and kings across Jesenya, and within ten years, she was renowned enough to strike out on her own. She became sought after by the ruling classes and the working classes for her abilities.
Gaston was a believer in the Dreamer God and the Historian Divine before he died, and he passed his faith on to Maleys. In turn, she found faith in the Mother of Connection as well. She came to appreciate the significance of literal bridges on her travels, and especially her desire to understand different peoples and have them make connections with each other.
As time went on, she became more and more successful, and now, in her early middle age, she is in the prime of her abilities.
