Lutipariant

Aliens from a nebula that bring foul energies to Shem that pollute it and make it unlivable. They are dangerously intelligent and move on the wind, which they befoul.

Basics

  • Taxonomic Order: Aliens

  • Alignment: Infernal

  • Energy: Brown Aether

  • Lifespan: 40 years

  • Diet: Nature

  • Habitat: Industrial regions

Origins

A distant nebula. A colony of them has landed on Shem in Lyfane, where they infest factories and other places that allow them to hide and pollute the world around them. The nebula they are from is not observable from Earth. On Shem, it is visible to the most powerful telescopes and magical means, a multicolored cloud only about 60 billion miles wide (very small for a nebula, hence why it is hard to see). It was created by the death of a star destroyed by horrible pollutants created by those that once lived near it, and the brown aether generated from that attained consciousness in the explosion.

Description

They appear to be a puffball mushroom, though they are not at all related to fungi of any kind. Their coloration matches the environment they are in as a form of camouflage.

Procreation

Lutipariants asexually spawn new lutipariants as they befoul enough organic materials around them.

Powers

If their puffball is popped, toxic spores will be released that poison everything they touch, living or not.

Befouling

Their poisonous spores befouls anything it touches. If what it touches is organic - alive or not - that material can potential develop into a new lutipariant. If it is not organic, it is still befouled, and the energy of brown aether will infuse it. The consequences of this varies by material - hard steel, concrete, treated wood, or other produced materials will simply be toxic to the touch for others; natural materials like raw iron ore, unquarried stone, or living trees will be poisoned, weakened, and reduced to sludge.

Weaknesses

Aether in sufficient power can destroy them or release them from their parasitic relationship with Shem.

Nations

Lutipariants belong to a single community (on Shem) in Lyfane.

Culture

Lutipariants dwell within industrial zones where they amplify the effects of the pollution there. As they wandered the universe, lutipariants sought worlds with enough polluted ground, air, and water for them to survive, but not enough that they would have nothing new to corrupt and eat.

Lutipariants generate new lutipariants, which they then use in order to generate more foulness, allowing themselves to eat. A new lutipariant has instant consciousness and awareness, but is weaker than an older lutipariant. The younger lutipariant either withers and dies as it is used to create food for its parent or it manages to steal enough of that food for itself and survives to break free and become an independent lutipariant.

In Lyfane, they have a symbiotic relationship with the ruling classes there, helping them generate brown aether and sludge that is used to increase the output of their massive factories, create weaponry, and protect the properties of the tycoons. Their entire role is simply to feed off the destruction of Mother Shem and escalate it.

Though they thrive off corrupting and befouling nature, they are perfectly capable of surviving without it, living off detritus like an actual fungus, but they gain more power from industrialized wastes and fouling. They engage in this practice for power, not sustenance.

Esoterica

Lutipariants are beings of brown aether and wield it inherently. While they are conscious beings, they do not have the bodies to wield other energies on Shem that require hands or usage of tools.

Religion

Lutipariants honor the Lyfanean deity Rota Futi, worshiped by the industrialists, as a sort of potent exemplar of their goal, but they do not have a religion of their own. Instead, they latch onto the religion of the other mortal beings in their area.

Gender

Lutipariants have no discernible gender traditions.

Economy

Lutipariants are parasites who thrive as the world dies. Lyfane is an industrial capitalist hellscape.

Military

Lutipariants support the Lyfanean military.

Language

The word “lutipariant” is Latin, but they do not have a language of their own, as they communicate only chemically.

Outside View

Those few who know of lutipariants usually assume they are unintelligent fungi. Those who know them to be intelligent are either the tycoons of Lyfane, who have a symbiotic relationship with them, or servants of Mother Shem, who recognize them as a threat to the world.

Estimated Populations

There are about 2 million lutipariant puffs in Lyfane and a negligible number outside it.
