| Description | Lunarians are tall, thin beings with stark white hair and skin that changes hue with the phase of the moon they are on. If they are not on a moon, the moon they were attuned to at birth determines their skin color. |
| Procreation | Follows the mother. |
| Esoterica | Lunarians can use any esoteric art except msawhat, which corrupts and destroys them. Faith, magic, and aetherial arts are common. |
| Cycle | Lunarians are attuned to lunar aether, which has a cycle that follows the moons. On Shem, there are three moons, which produce lunar aether by reflecting and transforming solar aether. This goes through a monthly cycle, with each moon affecting the lunar aether slightly differently. Lunarians as a species originated on the Grey Moon, which creates "pure" lunar aether, and they always reflect that. Waxing phase: Lunarians are growing in strength during this phase. On the Grey Moon, they can become invisible when the sun is not in the sky. They can feel the moon's power and feelings, but not fully commune, and they can sense the cycles of any sentient being near them. On the Green Moon, they are the same, but instead of sentient, it is non-sentient beings. On the White Moon, the msawhat is too strong and they are corrupted. Full moon phase: Lunarians are at full strength. On the Grey Moon or if they are attuned to the Grey Moon, they can become invisible when not in direct sunlight, commune with the moon, and sense the cycles of any living thing near them. On the Green Moon, they can commune with and speak to lunar animals as well. On the White Moon, the msawhat is too strong and they are corrupted. Waning phase: Lunarians are weakening during this phase. On the Grey Moon, they can become invisible when the sun is not in the sky. They can feel the moon's power and feelings, but not fully commune, and they can sense the cycles of any non-sentient being near them. On the Green Moon, they are the same, but instead of non-sentient, it is sentient beings. On the White Moon, the msawhat is too strong and they are corrupted. New moon phase: Lunarians are at their weakest. On the Grey Moon, they cannot bear direct sunlight or high heat (over 40 degrees Fahrenheit in Earth terms), they feel disconnected from everything around them, and they feel exposed. On the Green Moon, it is the same, but their temperature tolerance is slightly higher (60 degrees) and their sunlight tolerance is even lower. On the White Moon, the msawhat is too strong and they are corrupted. |
| Special Powers | All lunarians can see in low light. They have no need of air, water, and are able to survive in vaccuums. Their skin relfects non-lunar aether and absorbs lunar aether, making them weaker or stronger depending on the power of aether around them. They have a cyclic life. During times when the moon they live on is full, they have all of their powers. During a new moon, they are nearly powerless. |
| Weaknesses | Direct sunlight during the new moon can kill a lunarian. The air pressure of Shem is enough to crush them and normal air is toxic to them, except during a full moon. Msawhat can corrupt and destroy them. |
| Culture | In the early days of lunarian life, they lived on the Grey Moon. Their societies developed technologies and esoterica quickly, and they were able to visit the other two moons of Shem and other worlds and moons throughout the galaxy. They quickly built an immense empire. Then, the first War of the Gods occurred, and they were called back to Shem to defend their Goddess, their empire, and their culture. What followed was a series of betrayals and compromises that left two of their moons of Shem forever altered: the lunarians were betrayed by a powerful traitor who infused the Name of the White Moon with msawhat and genocided millions there, leaving the White Moon barren and disturbed, dangerous. In order to gain military advantage over the enemies who did this, the lunarian empire made a deal with the asterians, giving them the Green Moon, whose Name they infused with cosmic aether. The empire fell, but the lunarian species and culture survived on the Grey Moon. Though now long diminished, the lunarian people have developed a lasting culture. They live in small communities led by elders, usually chosen by their aetherial power and education. Each community has its own school, which is the heart of the community. The school teaches all crafts, lores, arts, and sciences to everyone. The leaders of the school are always part of the circle of elders. When a lunarian reaches maturity, they take a test at the school to determine their role in the community. If a lunarian decides to leave the community as an adult, they must test at the school of the community they settle in to determine their role there. If they do not like their role, they are allowed to re-test every three years. Outside of school, lunarians tend to be aloof and isolated. There is very little social life outside of what is necessary to function as a community. Lunarians trade with other communities and other species/nations, but they are very particular and tend to prefer their own communities to outsiders. Because they are affected by the phases of their moons, lunarians live a cyclical life. During waxing times, they study and learn and practice and work. During waning times, they prepare for the new moon phase, gathering what they need and focusing on relaxation. During the full moon, they engage in their most difficult or strenuous work, and during the new moon, they move in-doors (often underground) and rest. |
