| Description | Leprechauns are little bearded, masculine, elfin humanoids who dress in specific outfits based on their regional culture. They stand about 3' tall and quickly develop weathered appearances as adults. Most have bad eyesight and wear spectacles. |
| Procreation | Some Names are lucky, though few know which ones. When a fey is given a Name that is lucky, they become a leprechaun. Leprechauns can reproduce sexually with other feys and some mortals, but they cannot guess which Names are lucky, either. Fey babes become leprechauns by chance. Traditionally, a leprechaun child is left under a toadstool for adult leprechauns to find. |
| Esoterica | Leprechauns are beings of fortune, poioumenon, and dream energy. Like all faeries, they are users of The Tradition, a form of poioumenonic lore empowered by dream energies. They also use flux, possibility, paradox, mijjit, yahas, spirits, entropy, emotional resonance, euphony, cacophony, radiance, glory, and some kinds of aether. |
| The Tradition | Leprechauns have these basic faerie powers:
They can make shoes very well, and these shoes will bring good fortune to those who wear them. If they trod on and kill a four leafed or seven leafed clover, their luck will change to bad luck. They have good luck at games of chance if they have a penny on them. They can hide money anywhere so long as that place is an impossible place--the end of a rainbow, the dark side of the sun, the top of the wind, etc. If they own money once, it is always theirs. They are able to stand upside down on their hats, balance on the point of their hats, and even use their hats as weapons. A sword in the hand of a leprechaun will channel fortune, dream energy, and poioumenon as a wand might. They are extremely athletic. A leprechaun captured by a mortal or other fey (anyone not another leprechaun) can grant up to three "wishes" (moments of extreme good luck). They can only do this once in their lives without sacrificing their luck. |
| Glamour | Leprechauns can glamour themselves using certain ancient rhymes to take on certain specific forms: rabbit, cricket, or falcon. |
| Weaknesses | Leprechauns are unable to speak their True Names (and thus vanish or unvanish) while a mortal is looking at them. If they do not speak their True Name backwards into that same mirror in half a minute, most leprechauns lose their True Names. They have a fortnight to recover it or they become targets of the Wild Hunt, corrupted into another kind of fey, or turn into a hag or boggin. Iron or steel will bind a leprechaun into powerlessness. An iron horseshoe nailed over a door will bar a leprechaun from entering a house. Most leprechauns detest tobacco smoke, and it can be used to stave them off. This is just a preference, however, and not a weakness. Misfortune or doom harm them, and fate makes them uncomfortable. |
| National Culture | Leprechauns live in clans in the hills, fields, and forests. Their primary occupation is cobbling and selling shoes. Each clan is led by a council of seven called a seacht gcathaoir. This council changes every seven years in a contest of luck. Some leprechauns are child-finders who seek out new leprechauns by searching under toadstools. They also specialize in raising the children, bringing them into their clans. All leprechauns are considered male, though some have variant genders. It isn't much spoken of. Leprechaun clans have specific outfits. The main variations include
Leprechauns traditionally live among the clans for a few hundred years, but eventually become more solitary, keeping in contact through letters and occasional visits. They have no communities larger than small villages. Most spend their time cobbling, traveling to make sales, and subsistence gardening. All of the money they get, they hide away, rarely spending, mostly trading. The money, they say, brings them luck. Their homes are made from wood and stone, with dirt floors and toadstools for chairs. Stone tables and straw beds make up the rest of the furniture. While they travel, they use their good fortune to find old treasures buried and lost during ancient wars. Any given leprechaun over the age of 1,000 will have at least three powerful artifacts. |
| Seelie Culture | Leprechauns' solitary lives make them mostly outside of court culture, though their councils pay a tribute to the Seelie Court. Technically, they are considered peasants or workers. A handful of powerful leprechauns were given high rank in the court because they offered fortune and power to The Queen. The rest toil away. |
| Other Courts | Leprechauns are welcome in the Summer Court. The Kindly Court requires of them virtue before they are fully allowed in. The Unseelie Court enslaves them for "wishes," and the Winter Court does the same. The Unkindly Court will kill them on sight. |
| Mortal Interactions | Leprechauns enjoy making mock of mortals. If a mortal sees a leprechaun, the leprechaun will not be able to vanish or say their True Name. Some mortals attempt to capture them so that they can earn three "wishes." |
