| Description | Kokebi appear to be humans with brightly colored skin (green, violet, or blue), hair as dark as the night sky with stars shining within, and six fingers on each hand. |
| Hair | The hair of a kokeb glows brightly when they have absorbed enough starlight. When they do not have enough, they grow dimmer. Their hair is how they absorb starlight, and also the source of their strength and powers. If their hair is ever cut, they will lose power. If they ever lose all of their hair, they will die. Hair can be straight, curly, puffed, styled, feathered, etc., but never cut or removed. |
| Procreation | Kokebi engage in sexual reproduction as humans do. They can reproduce with other kokebi nations or with other metahumans, and it follows the mother. With non-human beings, reproduction is only possible with supernatural intervention. |
| Esoterica | Kokebi are beings of astral aether and emotional resonance. They engage actively in the arts of both of these, as well as fundamental aether, solar aether, lunar aether, flux, complexity, possibility, paradox, gebvel, dumaqu, poioumenon, lhair, euphotonia, fate, fortune, yahas, euergasia, entropy, banaru, void, Long Path, mystery, Damaskian powers, white tiger aether, mana, hegnh, iremia, euphony, cacophony, curacion, the gates, kor, and spirits. |
| Special Powers | Kokebi can use astral projection to explore the universe. They do this naturally as they sleep and dream. They have the ability to also project an image of themselves over great distances in order to send a brief message (no more than a minute or so), but only outside of heavy atmosphere. They can also infuse their feelings into displays of light; they cannot create distinct images, but rather explosions of light. These displays are brief, bright, colorful, and anyone who sees them will experience the feelings infused into them profoundly. |
| Territorial Powers | Among the asteroids that are their homes, the kokebi can guide and control the asteroids, keeping them together, sending them away, or causing their orbits to shift. They call this herding. |
| Weaknesses | Brown aether harms them. Heavy atmosphere can tire them out more quickly, but they can survive it. If their hair is cut or removed, they can be weakened or killed. |
| National Culture | Kokebi live in sprawling communities stretched across many large asteroids in the asteroid belt. They choose asteroids large enough to have a very small amount of gravity, which is all they need. This allows them to leap between them but also have some stability. Every community is led by a council made up of elected elders (kokebi over the 700 years old). There is no distinction between genders, and all work is shared. Everyone takes turns as a guard, as a healer, as a teacher, with childcare, with herding, with building, and so on. Those who show more aptitude in one area over others settle into those roles only after 500 years. Because they gain sustenance from starlight, they spend most of their days outside absorbing it. When something causes a lack of starlight in the area, they move. Kokebi measure time differently. They compare their lives to planets, stars, and other astronomical bodies. They consider a century a "moment" and a millennium a "mere glimpse." They do not count years, months, or days, but moments. Because they measure their lives against astronomic bodies, they always say their lives are very brief. (All measures of time listed are in Shem-years for ease of understanding.) Children are raised by members of the community and taught by other members as they cycle through their tasks. Children are allowed to play carefree until they are adults save for occasional stretches of education. They take on responsibilities about halfway through their first century, and they are considered adults only after their first century is over (a single moment). Kokebi say "we are young for but a moment" in reference to this. Arts are very important to the kokebi, especially visual arts and light art. Artists are revered, but not a special class unto themselves. They still must contribute to the community in other ways. Art is often focused on the cosmos or imagining what is on the surface of distant planets. |
| Ships | Kokebi create complex ships shaped like fish (a coincidence, as most of them have never seen a fish). These ships, called dodekka, are powered by astral aether, fundamental aether, flux, and emotional resonance. They are designed for long journeys, produce their own fuel, capture starlight to feed those inside, and can move nimbly through space. Some are outfitted to be used in combat, but most are for exploration and transport. Combat ships (dodekka-nui) use Damaskian powers, gebvel, astral aether, fundamental aether, and other powers to create esoteric weaponry. Those used for exploration (dodekka-kul) are the fastest and can travel at lightspeed, and those used for transport (dodekka-uab) are the largest and have special astral aetherial units that are bigger inside than out. |
| Outside View | Most Shem-bound nations know nothing of the kokebi, but many cosmic nations know them. Some view them unfairly as primitive. Others seek to take advantage of them. Some patronizingly think they must be protected. Others view them as they are and seek to trade and ally with them (mostly quartz dragons, asteriae, and kvarczina). |
