| Esoterica | Kith are beings of banaru, dream energy, and poioumenon. Like all faeries, they are users of The Tradition, a form of poioumenonic lore empowered by dream energies. They also use other hegnh energies, radiance, qi, Foundation, mijjit, blood energy, other humors, yahas, kor, symbolism, fate, fortune, light of truth, mana, and some aethers. |
| The Tradition | Kith have these basic faerie powers:
A kith will recognize any other kith on sight. They can bond to a lover's soul during coitus by speaking their True Names simultaneously (this does not have to be just two kith). Kith can trade powers with another kith by cutting open their hands and exchanging blood. Clan powers vary by clan. |
| Glamour | Kith can glamour themselves using certain ancient rhymes. Kith tend to glamour only when missing their relations; they will glamour to appear like those they miss most while looking into a mirror. They can use this to communicate with those they miss if they are dead or if they are alive and in front of a mirror. Otherwise, they dislike glamouring. |
| Weaknesses | If they do not speak their True Name backwards into that same mirror in half a minute, kith lose their True Names. They have a fortnight to recover it or they become a hag or a boggin, get taken by the Hunt, or are corrupted by uafas and become corrigans. Iron or steel will bind a kith into powerlessness. An iron horseshoe nailed over a door will bar a kith from entering a house. Most kith detest tobacco smoke, and it can be used to stave them off. This is just a preference, however, and not a weakness. Msawhat, especially pravum and uafas, harms them. |
| National Culture | The kith nation focuses on extensive clans. There are 40 clans among the kith, and each klan is made up of 40 families. The families alone are massive and go back for generations. Each family has a traditional territory where they communally own the land and other property; these territories make up clan territory. Each family is led by elders who are chosen either by election or by the elder council itself selecting someone who has specially earned a place with them through some great service to the family. The families also separately elect representatives to the clan council, which is in charge of the needs to the whole clan territory. The clans separately elect representatives to the national council, which is responsible for issues of national importance. The kith recognize 12 genders, with "man" and "woman" being focal points for most of them. Women and those of genders "close" to women are especially respected among the kith, and the four "woman"-oriented genders are over-represented among the councils and other important roles. Motherhood is greatly respected among the kith as well. Children are raised by the whole family, but mothers (birth-givers and/or those with the most central responsibility for raising the child) spend the most time with the child and have the most say in how they are raised. Children are taught about their families and clans first and foremost. Other basic skills come second. Families send their children to clan schools at the age of 12 until they are 25, at which time they are considered adults. For the first five years, they learn fundamentals. For the next five years, they begin the process of specializing, finding what they want their path to be. The last few years are spent on their focus, if they have found it, or more intensive studies otherwise. Most kith then leave school and take up a role in society. Some choose fields that require more study. These go to specialized national schools, which are free but hard to get into: medical, legal, esoteric, military, political, financial, philosophical, and certain engineering and scientific schools are the most common of these. Courtship among the kith is usually complicated and gets more complicated if it is inter-clan courtship. Kith are encouraged from a young age to be romantic. Though incest is strictly forbidden (and easily tracked due to the kith's recognition powers), intra-clan relationships are preferred to inter-clan relationships for political reasons. However, inter-clan relationships are actually more common. A kith who wishes to court another kith must start the courtship by asking for even the right to ask. From there, the courtship evolves with a series of requests for consent, building very slowly to actual romantic engagement of any kind. Non-monogamy is common among the kith, however, and casual sexual but non-romantic relationships are also common. Romance is held higher than sexual relationships, and asexual romances are not uncommon. Love is a core value. Because casual sex is not uncommon, births outside of marriage are not uncommon. These children are still revered and respected by the family and the clan; there is no stigma attached. Marriage is rare, but it is the most sacred act a kith can engage in outside of parenthood. Births are celebrated by the whole family; marriages are celebrated by the whole clan (or multiple clans). To get married, kith must ask their hopeful partner and then wait a fortnight for an answer. Any answer given before a fortnight is considered illegitimate in the eyes of clan law. (Some kith simply answer yes or no over and over again until the fortnight is up, just to emphasize their love. There is also a tradition of giving wrong answers for two weeks as a playful joke, if both parties are secure enough. This sometimes leads to misunderstandings.) Once a marriage is accepted, they must renew their answer every two weeks until the wedding itself. If the marriage is rejected, the rejecting party may relent at any time unless the offer has been revoked, but the asker may not ask again unless given unsolicited permission. Violation of this is a violation of clan law and can come with heavy penalties. The kith celebrate their families every month. The birth of a child is a celebration, but birthdays are conglomerated each month, so that everyone born in that month is celebrated on the same day (the 12th). These monthly celebrations are known as la linbh gealach. On these days, those who are being celebrated are given gifts (usually food or useful objects) during the daylight hours, and then at night, they must (if they are old enough) speak praise of the family in a speech before the family. Those who are not old enough are sometimes represented in this by their mothers. Each clan has a theme to them. They are represented by a symbol relevant to their history, and these also are reflected in the individuals' clan powers. Some examples include Clan Fuilnaofa, with the power to mark the ground with their blood to give them the power to sense nearby friends and foes, or Clan Cailc, who can draw or etch images that can move and interact silently with the world around them. According to their history, their Manifest, Etaine Ban Ildrus, sacrificed herself to the Hunt so that they could escape in their early years from the Unkindly Court. |
| Kindly Culture | The 40 clans of the kith have, for time immemorial, always elected as the head of their national council their "Queen", Mathair Og Arsa. To them, she is simply Mother Arsa; politically, to the rest of faeriedom, she is Queen Mathair. She is the elected head of the Court Council, which has representatives of each nation among the Kindly Court. Their guiding principle is the self-determination of all nations within the court (and of those oppressed in other circumstances around the world). As such, the Queen is merely a powerful leader on the council of the Court. The kith represent a large political force in the Kindly Court, however. The Kindly Court's role in faeriedom is to be a haven for those fleeing the wars between Summer, Winter, Seelie, and Unseelie. All other nations are welcome, though some nations must prove themselves before the Court because of the reputations of their nations/courts. This is ensured by the Kindly Council's military, a motley force made up of volunteers from each nation who are prepared to go anywhere in the world to serve the court, but mostly focusing on keeping the peace within the Court's lands. The kith are one of the most respected nations within the Kindly Court, in part because they are more in number than the others and in part because of their history of support to other nations. This is why the Queen has been consistently re-elected. |
| Other Courts | Kith who join the Seelie Courts are usually seen as powerful and principled workers who are a threat to the order of the Court and must prove themselves loyal to The Queen. Those who do prove loyal are kept close for their unique powers. Among the Summer Court, the kith are welcomed and revered, usually seen as important parts of the Court if they remain. Among the Unseelie, they are usually killed or enslaved, and among the Winter Court, they are usually captured and corrupted by pravum, turned into corrigans. Those who escape this through treachery against their own kind often rise to power in the Unseelie or Winter Courts. In the Unkindly Court, they are tortured and murdered on sight. |
| Mortal Interactions | Kith are very kind to mortals, but they wish mostly to be left alone. They will let a mortal in, feed, shelter, bathe, and clothe them, then send them away with no memory of the event by calling upon clan forsa codlata, who can put mortals to sleep and take their memories. |
