| Esoterica | Kilmoulises are beings of parasitic energy, poioumenon, and uafas. Like all faeries, they are users of The Tradition, a form of poioumenonic lore empowered by dream energies. They also use sin energy, msawhat, vile energy, hunger energy, self-denial, greenlight aether, currents aether, earthpower aether, winds aether, mijjit, mansam, blood energy, quaestus, choler, feirua, brown msawhat, mystery, Damaskian powers, Raesian energy, saliva energy, flux, fortune, and spirits. |
| The Tradition | Kilmoulises have these basic faerie powers:
Kilmoulises can do almost anything if it will cause a miller trouble, if they have inhaled some of the grain dust from that mill. They inhale food and drink through their noses. |
| Glamour | Most faeries can glamour themselves using certain ancient rhymes. Kilmoulises glamour themselves into animal forms. |
| Weaknesses | If they do not speak their True Name backwards into that same mirror in a minute, kilmoulises lose their True Names. They have a fortnight to recover it or they become targets of the Wild Hunt, corrupted into another kind of fey, or turn into a hag or boggin. Iron or steel will bind a kilmoulis into powerlessness. An iron horseshoe nailed over a door will bar a kilmoulis from entering a house. If a miller catches a kilmoulis, they can be forced to repay all their thieving and trouble by shaving their heads. |
| National Culture | Kilmoulises live in large families run by a cruel patriarch called an athair. The athair decides who is going to go raiding the mills in their territory, who gets to eat, who gets to work, and who gets to starve. Other than his trusted advisers and warriors, everyone is his property. Women among the kilmoulises are basically slaves to the athair or his trusted few. Gender diversity is discouraged. Courtship is forbidden except by permission of the athair, though many have relationships in secret. Children are raised by those the athair commands to. If a child comes to the athair's attention, they will be cruelly tormented, and thus, they are kept hidden by those that care for them. Raiding mills is the center of their economy. They take grain dust and valuables back to the family to share; the long-bhriseadh who raid the mills are chosen by the athair's whim, usually those most cowed by him. Anyone caught stealing from the athair (that is, taking their own bounty from the raid) is killed. The athair decides how much they will take each raid. Some communities take to leaving out tributes to them to keep them from wrecking the mill; this does not always work. Among the kilmoulis families, there are many, many feuds and grudges, territorial disputes, and disagreements. Thus, there is an independent council of very corrupt kilmoulis leaders called diosganaich. These decide disputes and keep things "fair," though truly they favor the best bribes. Kilmoulises are considered parasites by most. They live on the edges of small communities of mortals or other fey and raid them. Rarely do they run their own mills, though they are very skilled at it. This stems in part from their history of being raided and enslaved when they try to settle anywhere openly; thus, they live in secret. |
| Court Culture | Among the Unseelie Court, the kilmoulises pay tribute in order to be allowed to raid peasant-run mills. The nobles allow it for the right amount of tribute, and thus, the kilmoulises get some protections. Their diosganaich are sometimes welcomed as part of the ruling class, though rarely. Athairs are seen as high-ranking peasants. |
| Other Courts | Kilmoulises are welcome and not uncommon amongst the Unkindly Court. The Winter Court tolerates them sometimes but usually throws them out or enslaves them. The Kindly Court requires they convert, and the Summer and Seelie Courts see them as unwelcome pests whom they kill, capture, or banish. |
