| Description | Kalba segu are anthropomorphic dogs with human heads. They have horns on their heads. They stand about 6' tall and are covered in short, sleek brown fur. Their feet are canine, their teeth are canine, and their hands are more human-like. Their eyes glow red. |
| Procreation | All tantum reproduce asexually. Kalba segu spawn new kalba segu when they have drained enough entropy from intelligent beings, usually growing a massive bulb on their backs that erupts into a new kalba segu with random variant features. |
| Esoterica | Kabla segu are beings of entropy and gossamer light. They can use most supernatural energies. They most commonly use, other than their main two, infernum, flux, uafas, quaestus, parasitic energy, rending, desperation, lahab alqalb, black nommos, hollow energy, feirua, bijalee, void, qeernariji, mana, emotional resonance, mashoaab, and poioumenon. |
| Special Powers | Kalba segu can bark like dogs, which will inflict a random intense emotion upon those who hear them. Their gaze will randomly alter the soul of those they target, but only minorly. They can influence but not outright control dogs. They have up to nine other entropic or gossamer powers. |
| Abyssal Powers | All tantum can breathe underwater if they have drunk of abyssal waters in the last decade. Kalba segu gain their longevity from soaking in abyssal waters, which they do often, and they can and often do draw entropy from eating living things, usually intelligent beings. A kalba segu can alter the emotions of a target at the cost of most of their entropic energy. |
| Monster Antecedent | The monster Uridimmu appeared much as his descendants do, but he is much larger. He was born from the Abyss and quickly became a conqueror and mastermind behind many horrifying schemes, which all came to an end when various Divines rose up against him. He fled then and found safety with the Great Spider, whose webs repelled the other Divines. Kalba segu can draw from their bond to him, assuming they are appropriately charged with abyssal energies. This gives them the power to summon any kind of canine, influence oceans and rivers, and warp the minds of those they touch. |
| Weaknesses | The energies of lhair, heavenly virtue, shavev mashkalran, and liberation power all harm them. |
| National Culture | Amongst the abyssal marshes in the Adderswamp, the kalba segu are one of the most feared nations. They control six powerful but small cities made of warped wood and stone. Each city is ruled by a municipar, who usually views themself as a king, emperor, or god. Each city has its own traditions, but common among them all are their reverence for the crescent moon (a symbol, to them, of changing and of hidden power). There are three main facets of life in a kalba seguan city: the military, the slaves, and the free citizens. When a kalba segu is spawned, they are immediately enslaved by their parent (or eaten, if their parent is hungry or depleted). They spend the first hundred years of their life enslaved unless they buy, maneuver, or kill their way out of it. After 100 years, they are usually emancipated by law, meaning not true freedom, but a shift into toiling for the municipar or other more powerful figures as a soldier in the military. Every kalba segu who has not achieved freedom by other means spends 200 years in the military. Only the cunning, ruthless, or strong gain any kind of freedom. This is not uncommon, however, especially after a few decades in the military, where they often learn skills that allow them to fight or outwit their way to freedom. Citizens enjoy a laissez faire approach to their lives. As long as they pose no threat to the municipar, they can do as they please. As they spawn asexually, gender is not generally a concern among them, but political unions are common. "Marriage" is a term used by outsiders as the closest way to describe these, as they involve deep social and communal connection. A closer transltion of these political unions would be "long-term alliance." Love is not impossible to a kalba segu, but it is culturally seen as a weakness. These political unions are usually between two moderately powerful (militarily, politically, socially, magically, financially) kalba segus in order to achieve more power. These unions often use their power to keep their children out of the military (unless they are a military "family") and instead free them before 100 years are up to make them more powerful allies in the various machinations of kalba segu society. (The concept of "family" is also a taboo among them; the ruling classes of the kalba segu try to discourage every kind of collective organization they can. A society of individuals is much easier to control.) All kalba segu society is a political game. Ruining your opponent, getting them killed, or tricking them into embarrassing themselves is preferable to outright conflict, but they will resort to violence if necessary. A smart municipar pits his rivals against one another; a foolish one is deposed and replaced rapidly. Kalba segu keep canines of every kind. They train them, whether wild coyote or domesticated lapdog, to fight, to hunt, and to kill. Rich kalba segu import them from all over the world, often bringing in hellhounds, black dogs, and vargr. Poor kalba segu are usually slaves who take care of the canines of the rich, and thus, form bonds with them and often take a pup or two secretly to keep for their own. The six cities are often at war with each other, which is a relief to the other nations nearby. Rivalries between the cities are deep and extensive, usually based on control of trade routes, mines, or other resources, but sometimes as petty as minor insults between municipars. |
| Religion | All six cities have major temples dedicated to Uridimmu, whom they worship as a demigod. They rever the Great Spider as well, but he is usually a background figure. They tell many tales of Uridimmu's journeys and conquests, from which they draw "moral" lessons about individuality, freedom, and power. Worship involves sacrifices of slaves, feasts celebrating Uridimmu's successes, and displays of abuse and flagellation of "sinners". Sinners are those caught expressing one of the three forbiddens of love, compassion for the weak, or solidarity with the oppressed, though they frame it as the three weaknesses of attachment. Being detatched is freedom to them. The priesthood is composed of free citizens who choose to become priests as a means of gaining power. Within the church, there are no ranks except those imposed by the municipar, who appoints a high priest who controls the other priests. Slaves are kept for all the dirty work. Most priests are inveterate liars who claim to be chosen by Uridimmu and use this claim to bolster their power; they usually have their own personal followings and use these as gangs and bodyguards and agents. Sometimes a priest will take up the crown of the municipar, and in those cases, will call themselves municipar and high priest. This doesn't usually last long, however, as it doubles the number of their enemies. The priesthood's main symbol is the crescent moon, which they carry on a stick called an uskaru, a special staff with a metal crescent atop it. They also keep the tiara worn by the municipar during special holy days, which is annointed with gossamer light and abyssal waters every year. |
| Mortal Interactions | If mortal folk from outside Adderswamp encounter a kalba segu, they are either there to trade with them or they are about to be eaten. Kalba segu view other non-tantum nations as food, though they do recognize the need to trade with some of them. Outside of the swamp, a kalba segu is seen as an animal person usually and treated as one within the context of the culture's view of animal folk. If they are known to be kalba segu, they are viewed instead as dangerous cannibals, exotic wonders, or demons. |
