Description Jasper gargoyles appear to be massive, dark jasper-carved living statues of nightmare monsters. Bat or insect wings, huge fangs and claws, ridges along their backs, spiny tails, and four to eight arms. Sometimes they have multiple heads. They typically stand about 10' tall.
Procreation New jasper gargoyles must be carved from solid jasper.
Esoterica Carved from jasper by the Father of Nightmares, the first jasper gargoyles were beings of fear resonance, uafas, and arnum, and as such, they have certain prediliction toward skills in wielding those powers. Specifically, they often use the arts of broken soul, ritual mutilation, nightmare-weaving, and fear induction. Other common energies wielded are infernum, doom, vile energy, rending, mana, earthpower aether, rubedian aether, damaskian power, gebvel, fate, ordinal muscle energy, kor, and sometimes blasphemy.
Special Powers

A jasper gargoyle is terrifying to behold. The original jasper gargoyles were constructed to be bound to a spot to terrify anyone seeking to enter it and as such, all jasper gargoyles are bound to a location with the intent of scaring off intruders. Some intentionally expand their territory and subsume other gargoyles by eating their flesh.

Jasper gargoyles have immense strength. Most are capable of flight. They can go into stasis to prolong their lives if there is no imminent threat to their domain.

Jasper gargoyles can sense danger within their domains and, once a year, create pockets of frightening illusions anywhere within their domains (usually about 3' in diameter, in shadows) that terrify intruders.

Stasis Jasper gargoyles rarely go into stasis, but when they do, it is because they have acquired immense power or their masters demand it.
Weaknesses Pure dream energy or bravery resonance can harm them.
Culture

Most jasper gargoyles exist as servants to powerful followers of the Father of Nightmare. They protect temples, castles, fortresses, and so on. But in the mountains of Kurgrist, a small nation has arisen of jasper gargoyles who killed their masters and took over their domains. They are ruled by a series of jasper gargoyle tyrants now, but they cherish their illusion of freedom from their past masters.

Within their mountainous country, they live in small mountain towns and protect their competing domains. New jasper gargoyles are enslaved for 200 years (unless they free themselves) by their local masters. If they are made by the tyrant, they are enslaved for 1,000 years.

Once free, they take their own domain by killing and eating another gargoyle or by being granted it for service (previously having been connected to their master's domain).

Every year, they have a contest for the younger gargoyles for crafting illusions, for combat prowess, and for slave-catching. Those who win gain slaves, gargoyle servants, special powers, more domain, or rank within society. Those who lose are enslaved, killed, or forced into stasis.
