The Imperial Church
The Imperial Church is the syncretic, polytheistic, religious supremacist unified church of the White Crown Concordance. It is sometimes called Totalism. It is a political, social, and religious organization that unites the imperial religions of multiple empires, kingdoms, and countries, appropriates from many other religions, and attempts to homogenize faiths and cultures in an effort to maintain a political alliance that has allowed for millennia of world domination by the Concordance.
Structure
The Imperial Church has a semi-centralized structure. Politically, they all agree that the Pontifex of the Imperial Church will always be the highest ranking priest of Deus Supremus, the God Above All, the national deity of several of the empires, including Harkanheim and Burev. This is a political agreement done to make sure those empires will remain part of the Concordance, as their religious supremacy is central to their cultures (and their mechanisms of internal control). In practice, however, every empire’s primary deity tends to be the one most central to its culture, if there is one.
The island of Sacra Vita in the Talunese region was chosen as the heart of the Imperial Church because at the time the decision was made, it was neutral ground and central geographically. In some eras, this is less true than others.
The Pontifex has a council of Epsicopi (Bishops) who attend him from every empire, representing the heads of each empire’s church. This is not based on deity, but on geopolitics. Which empires are represented varies by era, as some empires and smaller countries go in and out of the Concordance.
Within each empire, they have the heads of their own churches and representatives of other imperial churches, smaller religions, and their own complexities. Some are more responsive to the dictates of the Pontifex than others, but they all ostensibly recognize his (almost always “his”) authority. Each imperial church has its own hierarchy within its own borders.
In the colonies, things tend to be influenced by the strongest imperial presence, but most default to following the broad structures of the Imperial Church.
Dogma
Central to their belief is that a figure named Kroni rose from The Pit, a massive sinkhole on the continent of Wymmera said to be where gods go to die, and brought salvation to the world just after an event known as the Fall. Kroni is said to be the savior of all on Shem and the one who will return to usher in paradise, though he was cast back into The Pit by enemies of the faith thousands of years ago. He is mostly spoken of, however, in Harkanism and similar religions, and is ignored by some of the other empires.
Common amongst all of the imperial philosophies is the threat of Hell or Perdition, the promise of eternal punishment for those who do not adhere to imperial docrtine. They are much concerned with sin, but each faith describes it slightly differently. Loyalty to the imperial governments, a belief in the evils of popular magic, the inferiority of fey and elemental powers, and the exploitation of those considered lesser are justified in most imperial faiths.
