Description At birth, all dragons look like large, pink worms. At maturity, hoary dragons grow to be huge, winged lizards with hoary scales and large ears.
Procreation Dragons mate with each other only. Without intense supernatural interference, half-dragons are an impossibility. Dragons lay one to three eggs at a time. Upon hatching, a dragon immediately begins absorbing background energies. All dragon eggs are filled with pure, liquid draconic energy, which sustains the baby dragon upon hatching.
Esoterica Hoary dragons absorb vast amounts of brumal aether. Msawhat, lunar aether, and void are also common. Arnum and shadow are not unheard of, nor is infernum. Yahas, psionics, possibility, currents aether, winds aether, pattern aether, seasonal aether, mystery, bone, and karma are also common. Divine energies are not unheard of. Holy powers, sol angelic aether, and rubedian aether are impossible, as is emotional resonance.
Special Powers

Dragons gain new powers as they accumulate more energies. At each stage of growth, they gain a new ability, usually culminating with the twelfth ability when they accumulate . The usual progression of powers is as follows:

  • Level 1: Cold blast breath weapon
  • Level 2: Immunity to cold
  • Level 3: Immunity to emotional control
  • Level 4: Immunity to instant death
  • Level 5: Scale grants bearer protection from heat
  • Level 6: Wall of ice
  • Level 7: Blizzard, once per year
  • Level 8: Voidblast
  • Level 9: Sense heat
  • Level 10: Instill apathy
  • Level 11: Summon ice elementals
  • Level 12: Soulfrost

All dragons accumulate energies by absorbing them naturally from the area around them. As such, they must carefully cultivate their lairs to provide the right kinds of energies, hence they hoard appropriate objects.

Other common powers include heartdraining, mind freeze, mind control, chilling wind, and bloodfreeze.

Alternate Forms Hoary dragons sometimes take the form of a yeti.
Weaknesses Sol angelic or rubedian aether will hurt them.
Subspecies Winter dragons have accumulated more brumal aether than most. They become vortices that absorb and destroy all heat, freezing the air solid around them, covering them in plates of ice. They appear to be a cross between hoary dragons and polar bears, and they have more powerful breath weapons and the ability to nullify someone's emotions at will.
Culture Hoary dragons lay their eggs in snowbanks and then abandon them. One in five survive. As youth, they compete with each other for resources in the barren tundras and mountains, and they become hard, solitary beings. By the time they are mature, they have usually acquired slaves and a small hoard, which they use to build and build in their isolated dens in the mountains and deep tundra, glacial caves, and crevasses. They rule small fiefdoms and mate only on rare occasions, never forming emotional bonds. When they grow old, they die alone and forgotten.
