| Description | A three-legged horse with burning eyes and hooves, skin of brimstone, and fangs. |
| Procreation | Helhests breed with one another for more helhests. They rarely breed with other demons unless they have an equine or similar form, and then offspring's species follows the mother. A helhest bred with an abomination creates an equine-shaped version of the abomination. A helhest bred with a mortal (horse, centaur, or other equine-like creature) creates an equine nephil. |
| Esoterica | Helhests are beings of infernum. They can use infernal arts of any kind that do not require hands. They cannot use any non-infernal powers. |
| Special Powers | A helhest causes fear in those mortals who see it, unless they are imbued with infernal energies or are strong of will. Those especially weak of will (exceptional failure) will grow fatally ill (equal to extreme case of the flu). A helhest can kill everyone within a holy place by circling it 13 times at midnight and screaming infernally. Their hooves burn with hellfire, their breath causes paralysis, and their gaze can cause a person to freeze with terror. Their skin is hot to the touch, and they will not wear a saddle. A helhest is immune to mundane heat and flame. |
| Court Powers | In the First Court, helhests have the power to fly at night and return to the Hells at will from any mortal realm so long as the sun is not risen. |
| Demonology | To summon a helhest, one must form an esoteric circle with burning horseblood and invoke one's own sins (at least seven). As long as the circle is maintained, the helhest will be contained and can be persuaded to serve in exchange either for special oats mixed with flesh (of anything, though an intelligent mortal being is most effective). One may not ride the helhest unless one is resistant to its heat, however. Helhests do not offer anything other than service as a steed in contracts, but that service comes with a bond that allows very close communication between rider and mount. To capture a helhest and draw its power, enslave it, or bind it into an object, one must first bridle it with a bridle made of an infernal metal (blackiron is most effective, but demonsteel works as well) or mundane metal infused with infernum or imbued with an act of sin through ritual violence. Usually this is done by commiting a murder with a metal object, then melting it down and remaking it as a bridle. An unwilling helhest mount does not bond with its rider. To draw power from an enslaved helhest, one must have reins made from infernal (or other appropriate esoteric energies) material. To bind it into an object, one must take the bridled helhest into a circle of burning horseblood along with the target object (or person) and invoke an infernal spell. Helhests cannot possess anyone and cannot be channeled. To create a helhest, one must infuse mud and clay with infernal eneriges through ritual violence or invocation of demonic powers (through Names, other demons, etc.) and shape it into the shape of a helhest, then leave it washed in horseblood and buried in a desecrated churchyard for thirteen nights. To turn a mortal horse into a helhest, one must bury it alive in a desecrated churchyard for thirteen nights and go each night to the grave to invoke a sin or demonic power. |
| Sending | A helhest can be calmed by an offering of oats, as if it were a normal horse, during the day, if it has no master present. If a helhest is incapacitated and buried, a narrow stone may be placed over its grave. Spitting upon this stone will drive the helhest back to the Hells. |
| Weaknesses | To destroy a helhest, one must bind it with a holy bridle, submerge it in holy water, or overwhelm it with heavenly essences, holy faith, qi, or positive resonances. |
| Behavior | Helhests are predators, and they behave as such. They are cunning, intelligent, and ruthless, and they operate in a herd led by a powerful alpha. In the Hells, they are almost all bonded to more powerful demons and kept as steeds, but those few free ones roam as dangerous predators who stalk the rare sources of flesh. Those who go to mortal realms ride the plains and kill and eat mortal horses, people, and other animals. |
| Culture | Helhest herds are brutal socieites where the strongest survive and rule. They are warped, hierarchical, predatory horse herds. |
| Hierarchy | A helhest herd is led by an alpha who is the strongest, most powerful of the group. This alpha has favored members as its guards, servants, and mates, and the rest are there to be bullied and controlled. Lesser helhests either willingly serve and gain favor, or they are desperate to survive. |
| Court Culture | Helhests in the First Court are the favored mounts of powerful fiends, tartaruchi, incubi, succubi, and fallen angels. They also serve those who are favored followers of the Serpent Mother. They are treated as horses, in spite of their intelligence. |
| Other Courts | Helhests exist in every court and serve as steeds in a similar fashion. They develop powers based on the predominant energies of that Court and are much varied depending on their riders. |
| Mortal Interactions | Mortals know of helhests in legends as demonic horses. They tell of them rising from churchyards at night, killing and eating herds of horses, and burning down holy places. They tell of powerful evil esotericists or other legendary villains riding them. They are a commonly known demon. |
