Description Shell gargoyles appear to be made of mother-of-pearl, sea shells, and sand. They often have crab or lobster claws and lobster tails. They have massive fins rather than wings, but the fins do allow them to glide through the air. They sometimes have patches of fish scales or spines of fishbone.
Procreation New shell gargoyles are collected and constructed.
Esoterica Shell gargoyles are heghnic beings. They were originally crafted to guard the homes of followers of the Hearthmother and developed their own cultures and traditions. They are often users of ukukhusela and phab ntsa. Because much of their time is spent on guard, they often also use radiance to improve their vision and other senses. Other esoteric energies they sometimes use include heavenly light, mana, dumaqu, aether (esp. wind, currents, earthpower, bestial, and pattern), gebvel, damaskian power, mashoaab, shebv heya, ordinal muscle energy, symbolism, kor, or the Law.
Special Powers Shell gargoyles protect their building, their town, and their nation, and as long as they are within one of those, they can sense danger. The are bound to their home, whatever that may be, and if it is damaged, they will feel it. As long as they live, however, the home will never be completely destroyed. They are extremely tough, and they spend time in stasis when not active. They have fins and can swim and breathe underwater, but also glide on the air like flying fish.
Stasis Shell gargoyles can go into a state of stasis, which is similar to a deep sleep, but their bodies solidfy into impenetrability during their time and they become unwakeable except by extreme danger to their homes or pre-decided triggers that they set themselves. They use this stasis to extend their lifespan so that they might protect their homes longer. Time in stasis does not count toward their typical lifespan.
Weaknesses If they are disconnected from their homes, they fall into untreatable depression.
Culture

Shell gargoyles live in small clans in their island towns near the sea. They protect their homes and temples and towns communally, but each gargoyle has their own specific home as well.

Originally, they were crafted to serve the homes and temples of others, but they so touched the Hearthmother that she granted each of them freedom to serve themselves. In honor of this, shell gargoyles leave home at the age of 200 to seek service to the Hearthmother's other followers for 100 years before returning home. Shell gargoyles who do not serve the Hearthmother often replicate this by going out to serve those who would pay them, but they always return home.

In their towns, shell gargoyles share their space with other beings, since they often prefer to be on the outside of their buildings. They form symbiotic relationships with other nations or species. However, they always have their own leadership, society, and culture separate from those they live with. They have their own council of elders, their own constables, their own festivals and rituals, and their own places of worship.

Going into stasis is a major decision for a shell gargoyle and only done if they are not needed for an extended period of time. They have going away parties before they go into stasis, eat up everything they have left in their larder, and make sure their home is well provided for.
