Guardian of Mortality

A user of mortal will, the rigid power of the mind and soul of a mortal who does not worship or acknolwedge the power of the Divine. Guardians of Mortality are formal members of the organization of the same name. They are partly warriors, partly evangelists, and partly specialized agents of the organization.

The Guardians

Ranks

The Guardians have a simple hierarchy: the 13 ranked Guardians, and then the common Guadians. The ranked Guardians sit on a council that makes decisions for the group, with the Last Guardian always having the final say. The ranks are
  • The Last Guardian, their leader, the most elite of them all.
  • First Guardian: the eldest Guardian. They are tasked with keeping the archives, libraries, and treasury of the Guardians. They advise the Last Guardian, and they are often a retired Last Guardian themself.
  • Second Guardian: the Guardian who heads up the study of mundane and magical science and medicine. Science is believed by the Guardians to be the antidote to Divine power.
  • Third Guardian: a woman (or non-man) among the Guardians who represents the non-men among them as an adviser to the Last Guardian and who works to meet their specific concerns. Often some kind of witch.
  • Fourth Guardian: an elite assassin who kills the enemies of the Guardians, usually members of different faiths. Their identity is completely hidden, and they do not sit openly on the council. Only the Last Guardian and the Third Guardian know their identity. They are never on the council as a different member. They also serve as spymaster.
  • Fifth Guardian: the head of the antidei, tasked with coordinating their investigations as well as conducting internal investigations within the organization.
  • Sixth Guardian: the Guardian who maintains the fleet and stables of the organization. They are a logistics manager, quartermaster, and either a mechanic or animal-caretaker, usually.
  • Seventh Guardian: a thief tasked with stealing religious artifacts, Gifts, and other objects of power from the enemies of the Guardians. Like the Fourth Guardian, they serve on the council in secret and their identity is never known, nor do they ever serve as a different Guardian on the council.
  • Eighth Guardian: the Guardian who cares for the animals, plants, and other lifeforms the Guardians keep, excluding those in the stables. They keep the gardens, the fields, the livestock, the kennels, etc.
  • Ninth Guardian: the Guardian who serves as messenger and courier, and coordinates the postal service of Jesumein. They are often the right-hand of the Last Guardian.
  • Tenth Guardian: the Guardian who trains all Guardians in combat. They are essentially a training sergeant, though they have higher rank and often are retired from service as a warrior.
  • Eleventh Guardian: the Guardian who studies all esoteric arts and energies and teaches them to other Guardians. This Guardian is often a polyesoteric esotericist, and as such, a very rare individual. They are extremely powerful and a valued adviser to the Last Guardian.
  • Twelfth Guardian: the Guardian who maintains the buildings, sewers, walls, and so on of Jesumein. The builder, smith, carpenter, mason, and general artisan-in-chief, or the one who coordinates all of the above for the city.
Last Guardian

Specializations

Each rank has a small but skilled group who serve them and take their numbers as their title:
  • Zeroes: the direct servants of the Last Guardian refer to themselves as "zeroes" as something of a joke, but the title sticks and is taken with honor. They vary in task and occupation, as needed by the Last Guardian, but most are just servants.
  • Ones: the keepers of the archives, library, and treasury. Scholars and accountants.
  • Twos: scientists and doctors.
  • Threes: witches, morrigans, and women in general who work for the Third.
  • Fours: assassins and spies.
  • Antidei and Fives: the investigators of Divine crimes are the antidei (see below). Fives are the small force of internal police.
  • Sixes: drivers, riders, pilots, grooms, sailors, and so on who work transportation for the Guardians.
  • Sevens: the significant network of mortalist thieves around the world.
  • Eights: animal keepers, gardeners, farmers, and mycologists.
  • Nines: messengers, couriers, and errand-runners.
  • Tens: warriors and soldiers.
  • Elevens: esotericists of any kind.
  • Twelves: artisans, builders, and common laborers.
