| Description | Gnolls are analogous in appearance to D&D's gnolls, appearing hyena-like in appearance, though broader in body slightly, & with a less furry form (a hairless cross between a hyena man & a pig man is perhaps the best description). They do have tusks & snout-like noses along with their hyena-like faces. They range between 5' & 7' tall. Their young are sleeker, yellow versions of the adults called yaenods. |
| Procreation | Follows the mother, with other goblins. Halfbreeds may occur outside of race. |
| Magic | One in five million have soul magic. One in five hundred thousand have heart magic. Mind magic, body magic, & void are possible. Faith is not uncommon. |
| Special Powers | Gnolls are extremely heat resistant. They tend to use very little water (hence the pejorative camel goblin), & they tend to be stronger in the noonday sun. They have an affinity for hyenas. Yaenods are much the same, but they need more water and aren't as strong. |
| Weaknesses | Darkness & moon magic & faith can hurt them. At night, they tend to be as weak as newborn babes. |
| Culture | Gnolls live in large clans that follow a female-leader, known as the Sun Queen. They have a rigid noble code, called the Code of the Sand, which is said amongst them to be the root of the Tara'hinian Code (though there is no evidence of this--it is more likely both derive from the similar source of sun faith). Gnolls abhor the night & hide during that time, despite the oppressive heat of the desert sun (in which they seem to thrive). The most common interactions they have with outsiders comes through their burdrukh, a mix between traveling holy men & merchants, who acquire goods & services for the clan that they cannot make or provide for themselves. Gnolls are proud, noble creatures, but their tendency to scavenge the desert for survival has given them a negative image outside their own society. At about the age of 10, yaenods go through the Rite of Scorching, during which they are given a lot of water and forced to drink it. They are then sent into the desert for a month, alone, with no water. If they survive, they come back full grown gnolls. Gnolls are called the Scorched Horde. |
