Military: Notoriously difficult to invade, not a threat of invading others. Artillery is their keenest force, but in any given branch, the technology has a high chance of being genius. No one willing goes to war with gnomes.
Culture: Hill gnomes have terraformed their hills into complex irrigation, wind-powered automatic farms. They spend their time improving these, or being hurled through the air by the resultant explosion. Bell gnomes tend to spend time in their various Belfries, working hard at inventing machines that manipulate sound, but for every Hans Thereminplatz, there's a Yoko Cannontaster, if you know what I mean. Greater gnomes have invented the committee and spend most of their time in them, designing new systems to run the government, or at least keep it from exploding. Maker gnomes spend their time in their mechanized cities, working on the next breakthrough, and inventively exploding. Lost gnomes, meanwhile, have the rudimentary magitechnical institutes started, but are focusing on more dangerous projects for the time being. Mind gnomes... What's it called when you don't remember because your machine erased your thing that remembers for you? Storm gnomes live by the seas and harness lightning in horrible ways. Wind gnomes dwell in high places, sometimes mountains, other times skyscrapers, other times trees, and attempt to fly. Merry gnomes work on the emotional engineering projects they are most famous for, largely ending with pie. Gold gnomes are financial engineers, creating financial systems that sometimes make sense. And clock gnomes work on time, from time to time. Together, this patchwork of engineering has created a functional society so frightening, no one's brave enough to say how it works.
