Farinaz was taken slave as a child, bought by a rich family, and trained to be an administrator and memorizer, someone to recite facts to a rich accountant. She eventually bought her own freedom, but trying to live in Haenor as a former slave was difficult, and she found it difficult to get a job. Eventually, she used her skills at a gambling hall, and though she was thrown out, she came to the attention of the Red Grith, who actively recruited her. Over the course of the next few decades, she proved so skilled as a gevhiter that she rose in the ranks and became the Captain of Heart.
