Backstory
Einarr Gunnarsson was born at sea. His mother, a captive taken on a raid by his Jorgendish father, was not yet ashore when she went into labor. Rather than move her via longboat, his father, Gunnar Magnusson, chose to let her give birth there on the warship. He named him Einarr for the child's wail reminded him of the maddened war cries of his best warriors.
Einarr grew up knowing he would one day be a raider, and by the time he was 10, he had learned to wrestle, wield a dagger and sword, and sailing. By the time he was 12, he had gone on his first long voyage, and by the time he was 16, he had killed his first victim in a raid. By the time he was 20, he lead his own raids, and by the time he was 21, he lead his own ship. In time, he became a clan leader and a feared name along the northern coasts of Ranu.
As time progressed, he took to the drink and excesses brought on by power and wealth and a lifetime of raiding. After so many raids and so long at sea, he chose to settle down on the mainland, use some of his wealth for the acquisition of a large fishing vessel, and perhaps rest a little. For nearly a decade and a half, he lived a quieter life, gathering old crewmen and new workers to him as he made a life for himself as a fisherman. He continued to drink heavily into his old age, but his mind remained sharp. Sharp enough to see the writing on the wall when the Vesturians came.
The fall of the Faric states--sister nations along coastal Ranu--to the Vesturian Empire was a forewarning, but the alliance the Council of Clans made with the Vesturians smacked too much of occupation for Einarr's liking. When they killed several of the clan leaders in the night and replaced them with Vesturian stooges and a temporary viceroy, he knew that it was over. Jorgendheim would be a satellite state to the Vesturian Empire, and later, a slave state.
Having none of it, Einarr gathered his workers and old crewmen and made them an offer: join him at sea for a life of freedom, or stay behind and suffer the whims of Vesturia. Eleven of his men chose to join him, and the rest, Einarr gave the fishing business to.
Stealing a decent war ship called, in translation,
The Black Spear, the twelve of them set sail southward, away from the wars, to likely villages along the northeastern coasts of Ranu and beyond.
Crew
- Erik Magnusson, helmsman, human, aged 52: Einarr's second cousin on his father's side, Erik is a skilled helmsman who served with Einarr during their raiding days, and worked on Einarr's fishing ship. He's missing a few fingers and all of his hair, and his belly is much larger than it used to be, but he can still fight and navigate and hold a ship's wheel.
- Jarl Ivarsson, former hunter, lupa, aged 48: Einarr's groundskeeper and huntsman on Einarr's cousin's farm, Jarl is a wolfman who decided to go with Einarr to the seas. He has little experience with sailing, but he's a quick learner, even at his age, and a vicious fighter.
- Davos Orvarson, lookout, human, aged 27: Einarr's sharp-eyed fisherman who proved an able lookout on more than one occasion. He has only sailed casually before--never as a raider--so this adventure is all new to him. He grew up as a farmer.
- Yngvi Tyrsson, fisherman, human, aged 40: one of Einarr's fishing buddies who shares Einarr's views on Vesturia. He ditched his family to join Einarr on the ship. He's as skilled a sailor as Einarr has met, but not as great a fighter. He also serves as ship's cook.
- Gudrun Toksvigsdotter, raider, ursian, aged 21: a bearwoman from the coasts who has lived most of her life on ships. She briefly worked on Einarr's fishing ship after losing her eye in a fight and deciding to take time away from the raids. She was halfway out the door already when Einarr proposed his plan.
- Knute the Mad, raider, spinel dwarf, aged 377: a dwarven sailor who has worked as a raider in Jorgendheim for longer than anyone else Einarr knows, his family emigrated before Starfall at some time. He has a reputation for foolharidness, but he is a fearsome fighter and a talented sailor. - deceased
- Rikard Ivarsson, carpenter, human, aged 33: Unrelated to Jarl, Rikard is a human shipwright and carpenter who worked for Einarr on his fishing ship after leaving the raids due to some sort of persistent cough. He still has the cough, but he'd rather die coughing at sea than chained to a Vesturia soldier. - deceased
- Hildr Kjellsdotter, raider/whore, human, aged 17: a seaside prostitute who worked as a barmaid at one of Einarr's regular haunts. She has chosen to become a raider instead, and she has proven an able if unremarkable fighter.
- Vidarr Vidarrson, raider, starkad, age unknown (young, though): a giant down from the mountains who did the major hauling on the fishing vessel. He's never been to sea, but he's terrifying to face in battle. He barely speaks, but he is not unintelligent. Simply quiet.
- Herleif Trucket, war drummer, human, aged 20: a tongueless war drummer who keeps the beat for the rowers/raiders on the ship, Herleif is known to have a sadistic streak when he gets out from behind his drum. He is the son of one of Einarr's old crewmen, and he took him on only because Herleif's father could not make it. - deceased
- Eindride Ragnarson, raider, badgerman, aged 24: one of the better fishermen, Eindride is a vicious warrior who hates Vesturians for undisclosed personal reasons. He never uses weapons, but relies on his claws and teeth in battles, and tends to fight naked. He prays to the Avenger Divine nightly.
