Dionysus Common Demonic Names; The Nameless Ones; The Naming of the Fay; A Namer's Guide; The Names of the Gods; True Names & Their Properties.
Sue Let's start with Names of the Gods, then move on to True Names.
Dionysus It lists the true names of each of the gods of Shem (none of the lost gods are present) & explains how their names define their existences (or perhpas vice versa), & how the powers of the names evolved (& how Banner & Carolia don't have that connection).
Sue I'm just looking for info on the origins of names.
Dionysus True Names also explains how the name defines a being, how it can change over time as a being changes, & how you can gain the True Name of some beings, especially faeries, by tricking them or by using magic or faith.
Dionysus It also mentions that every being on Shem has a True Name that is its own, unless it lost that name somehow.
Dionysus The origins of the True Name are hard to pin down, but they inevitably pass down from the parents.
Sue That makes me want to read The Nameless Ones.
Dionysus That;'s about faeries who have lost their true names & thus had their identities weakened.
Dionysus Or altered
- Sue starts scanning all the books for any reference to a name gatherer.
Dionysus Just one, in the Nameless Ones, which mentions a rumored being that would destroy beings when it took their names. The Gatherer was known to be allied with the Wild Hunt
Sue Finally, what is The Namer's Guide about?
Dionysus His translations in the margins indicate this foreign alphabet is from another plane. It's about a race called "namers," who can bestow new identities by naming things True Names. They can collect them, trade them, buy them, sell them, etc.
Sue Holy crap.
- Sue will read that one in depth.
Dionysus I'll write up the race tomorrow, hopefully, & that will provide most of the info. Basically, none have been known to be on Shem before, though that doesn't mean they haven't been. They appear more or less human, so it's possible they were incognito. And they can rename themselves to hide, too, though that's risky.
Dionysus Distantly related to the tythes on Shem.
Dionysus Anyway, the guide is for namers. It tells them what the good planar markets are for names, though most of that information means nothing to you.
Sue I don't recognize any of the planes named?
Dionysus The few that do are the faeries, demons, & gods of some of the Shemmish planes.
