| Description | Anathem gnomes are short (about 3'), Their heads are slightly too big for their bodies. They have big noses, wide grins, and human-hued colored hair and skin, which tends towards being perfectly solid in color (no blemishes or bumps or noticeable changes in pigmentation). Their hair is always a hue different from their skin (i.e., dark skin is matched with light hair). |
| Procreation | Gnome breed with each other, where the type of gnome is determined by the mother of the gnome. Breeding with non-gnomes is only possible with supernatural intervention. |
| Esoterica | Gnomes are hegnhic beings who are compelled to obey specific rules. By obeying the rules, they gain insights into systems and mechanism that gives them a supernatural affinity for devices and engineering. Anathem gnomes also gain insights into violence through infernal energies. Gnomes can use almost any supernatural energy except entropy, and anathem gnomes cannot use any heavenly essence except Foundation or hegnh. The most commonly used are Foundation, aether, ethereal essence, yahas, void, mashoaab, damaskian power, arnum, and ordinal power. |
| Special Powers | Anathem gnomes have supernatural skill with engineering and devices that are used for violence and cruelty. Like all gnomes, they have gnomish illogic damage, wherein their inevitably dangerously failed experiments do not, in fact, hurt them. They also tend to inherently know the way to use a common object to cause pain. |
| Weaknesses | Entropy and heavenly light. If a gnome violates their rules, they become a rogue gnome whose energies are askew and dangerous. |
| Rules | Anathem gnomes must obey three basic rules:
|
| Culture | To an anathem gnome, family is just a source of exploitable labor or test subjects. They grow up abused and rejected, raised by anyone who thinks they can benefit from doing so. They come of age when they break free, usually through some device or machine they have designed and built in secret. Courtship is usually mutually beneficial opportunities for escape, advancement, or invention, and it rarely lasts long. Once an anathem gnome escapes their cruel upbringings, they often sell themselves as indentured servants to schools run by the powerful among them. Anathem gnomes live in cruel societies where the strong exploit the weak, where profit and violence take precedence to anything else. The most powerful and talented gnomes become war engineers, designers of prison camps, tools of torture, or experts in murder and criminal enterprises. They often work for other nations and countries as specialists. Governing anathem gnome society is a strict hierarchy of powerful oligarchs who run their society like a mafia organization. They have enforcers, but no judges. They have crime bosses, but no rules except their basic rules and the treaties they keep their society from all out war (if such is the case). Most anathem gnomes belong to one of the major oligarchal organizations, called cabals. |
| Engineering | Anathem gnomes are skilled with engineering works of violence. The most common uses for this are war, torture, and murder. Their preferred materials are laburnam and steel. They know how to hurt, how to control, and how to kill with their machines. They always design their devices with a flaw they can exploit to protect themselves, but never tell a buyer or recipient other than themselves. They are completely mercenary. |
