Born Alexei Salvatore, also known as Alexei Andreev and Alexei Tora, Alexei was born to the Salvatore family in Maskovy, and then orphaned at a very young age. His family's best servant, Tora Sensei, fled with young Alexei to Silver Mountain and raised him there alone, teaching him the arts of combat, Aikido, and mountaineering. When Tora died, Alexei was 13, and struck out on his own as a mountain guide and woodsman. Alexei fell in with the other members of the party and assisted them in bringing down the plague bearers and the sisters of destruction, and is known for, among other things, assisting a morag through a wall.

Alexei became the Emperor of Tarahin by pulling crown-granter out of its stone, after which he married a woman of the wind, unified the kingdoms of Shem against the Srisian empire, began advancing the Tarahin empire, obeyed the law of fives, and went home.
