Unaligned Spirits

Beings based on folklore, fairytales, myths, legends, or stories who use unaligned magic.

Genius loci: pl. genius locorum. The spirit of a place that protects it. They often take the form of local religious symbols, but they also take the forms of snakes. They sometimes appear to be spirits bearing special symbols, like cornucopias or libation bowls. They are associated with the offerings made to them, which often shapes their appearance and attitudes.

Gnole: spirits who dwell deep in forests, usually in trees, where they keep massive emeralds and other treasures. They can see through the holes and knots in nearby trees and turn invisible if their treasure is threatened. They have very powerful defensive magic.

Korpokkur: 3’ tall spirits from southeastern islands who come from a culture of fishing and sport, making them very agile. They can influence animals and vanish at will. They live in hidden pits covered in butterbur leaves, and they dislike being seen by outsiders. They use stone tools and make lots of ceramics.

The Lauro: a spirit that lives in the woods or within the walls of country houses, barns, or city houses. They can create illusions of terror, but they tend to try to be helpful, especially around the farm. They like to tend animals, protect them at night, milk them, groom them, or give golden coins to the farmers. Some fight off wild animals. Some are more mischievous, knotting horses' manes or causing sleep paralysis. Their benevolent/malevolent nature reflects their unaligned magic - they are very susceptible to influences of celestial or infernal energies, swaying them one way or the other.

Maa-alused: small fey beings who live in small communities where up is down and left is right and all things are reversed. Their reversed communities are magical and difficult to enter or escape. They otherwise live just like mortals do, just smaller.

Munaciello: a spirit similar to a fairy changeling, munaciello is born when someone of noble birth is cursed by another spirit. The munaciello is born as a spirit no matter the species of the parent, and for this reason, is often called "deformed" (though they are of their natural form for a munaciello). They grow to be about 3' tall and have a fey appearance. They wear stolen clothing or donated clothing, usually, and are drawn to the ruins of abbeys and monasteries (where they often find lost monk's clothing). If they wear black and white, it gives them magical powers. They are also partial to silver buckles on their shoes, which protect them from the wrath of their parents. If they put on a hood, they can gain magic of luck - black hoods give bad luck to others, red give good. They can swim well and breathe underwater. Many of them have formed a community that dwells in the wells and canals, cleans and works in them, and steals food and money from people. They can vanish once per day, and if affronted, they can cause disease or financial burdens to hit people.

Pandi: like the panotti, pandis are spirits with very large ears. They have eight fingers and toes, and they have white hair that turns black with age. They are skilled with bow and spear, culturally, and they are born with all of their teeth. They live for 200 years. They have many spells that make them good warriors.

Pech: 3’ tall gnome-like spirits who are enormously strong and brew heather ale. They build megaliths and like to fight. They have bright red hair, disproportionately long arms, and huge feet that they use as umbrellas when it rains. They were known for their skill in masonry and architecture, their communal work ethics, and their ruthless trickery when faced with enemies.

Rakshasa: tall, powerful spirits who are able to alter their appearances with illusion or shapechanging, have a wide variety of powers, and are from the far southeast. Learn more about rakshasas online and consult the GM to play one.

Squasc: a mischievious squirrel spirit with tawny fur, but no tail. They delight in frightening people and playing jokes on children. They can vanish and reappear nearby if it is going to surprise people. They are also able to climb like a squirrel and jump great distances.
