Unaligned Scholars
Those who use unaligned magic to learn or teach.
Hyperscientist
Type: Scientist
Those who experiment with the energy of possibility using special glass beakers and other materials to create magical experiments. Using possibility is very difficult, though the methods seem simple, as the potíri required to use it is very fragile, rare, and expensive. To wield possibility, one must use the correct materials and engage it, invoke it, through strict adherence to the scientific method: questioning, hypothesizing, experimenting, analyzing, and concluding, often in repetition.
- Question: a hyperscientist of any scientific discipline must first draw obsevations and being to question how things work. Once they are aware of (at least) two competing possibilities, they are able to engage the energy.
- Hypothesis: they must then propose two hypotheses that cannot coexist. In this, they must not simply think it, but invoke the hypotheses through written or recorded methods.
- Experiment: the experiment is the key to wielding possibility. Once they have their hypotheses, they must gather appropriate materials for the experiment. If the experiment does not require glassware, they must find a way to incorporate it, even if it is as simple as using lenses to observe or a pen to jot down notes. The glassware (see below) channels the possibility that has formed in the mind of the hyperscientist and been invoked through recorded hypotheses. The experiment must have an outlet for the hyperscientist to draw from their mind the energy of possibility. This involves a direct connect to the mind, often through the eyes, as a lens made of potíri is the easiest method. Once the energy is drawn out (appearing as a green spark), it must be captured in potíri glassware. Once it is captured, it can be drawn out via tubing or by applying heat or electricity to it. With enough of it, it can be used to multiply the experiment at hand in order to test multiple hypotheses at once, running them simultaneaously in separate facets of reality.
- Analyze: analysis of the various results can be done mundanely, or, if there is enough possibility left, it may be applied to the results via special lenses to aide in gauging multiple results at once.
- Conclusion: any conclusion made will close the loop on the possibility engaged to experiment with, and any surplus possibility generated through the experiment will be stored in the glass used. If used for a related experiment, it will be even more potent.
Hyperscientists' abilities vary by field of science. They are often employed in imperial academic institutions.

Legismaester
Type: Lawyer
A legismaester is a lawyer who wields the magic of the law. They do this by following a specific set of rules and laws personal to them, and doing so near perfectly to draw magic from them.
To do this, they must study the relevant mortal law to the area they are living in. They must recognize these laws as legitimate. They must understand the laws and know which ones they are subject to, and they must accept them and be able to serve those laws as an officer of the relevant courts. Most learn them by studying them via copying them over and over into a book.
To become a legismaester, one must study law for years, come to understand mundane and magical laws, and find their own seven personal laws upon which to abide. They must then abide by these rules for up to seven years, at minimum six months. Once they feel the power of their law within themselves, they take themselves to a public space and wait. The shortest wait is seven hours. The longest is six days. During that time, either another legismaester will arrive and place their hand on the shoulder of the candidate, a local authority will call the name of the candidate, or a circle will glow bright copperish brown in order to mark the candidate as chosen for training, or the time will pass and no reaction will occur in order to mark the candidate as unworthy. If this happens, the candidate may try five more times, once per year.
While in the circle, their worthiness is tested internally, as spirits of law and order will tempt them, challenge them, and test their knowledge. None of this is visible to outsiders, but eventually, a legismaester or local authority will be visited by spirits or the circle will glow to indicate success. The method of choosing is determined by practical circumstance: if there is a local legismaester in a position to train a new one, they will be called to do so; if there is one in a nearby town or city, a local authoirty is called to make the arrangements for the candidate to go train there; if neither of these is in place, the circle will glow and the candidate must find their own way to gain a mentor.
Training takes up to six years, but usually about three. If the candidate seeking a to be a legismaester does not gain a trainer right after their choosing, they must go find one. Training has three parts: learning the law, wielding the law, and interpreting the law. Learning is something the candidate will have already started. To graduate to a full legismaester, the candidate must spend six days in meditation upon the law, stand up to a series of tests, and then be tested on difficult cases by their mentor. If the mentor views them as worthy, they are given a mantle of copper cloth to wear as a mark of their authority.
Legismaesters practice law like mundane lawyers, but they use their magic to invoke the power of mortal law when they sense it is being violated, or when they need to engage it in court. They gain various abilities:
- Invocation of the law: they can invoke the power of the law to force anyone within their gaze to obey it. They often use this in court if someone is trying something screwy in regards to legal procedure.
- Protection of the law: they can, if they have not violated their personal laws, draw upon it as personal magical protection from aligned magicks or attacks that violate the law.
- Intricacy of the law: they can invoke the power of the law to read the intricacies of the law and understand them, the intent behind them, the spirit of them, and the plain meaning of them.
- Eyes of the law: they can invoke the power of the law to see when someone has violated it within the last 24 hours.
- Mantle of the law: they can invoke the power of the law to protect someone else from manipulations of the law.
When the laws of the land are contradictory, the legismaester must either decide which to enforce, choose not to enforce, create a hierarchy of enforcement, or find a compromise in order to use their powers when such cases arise. As long as they are consistent in their approach, they will suffer no penalties for their choices.

Schreyber
Type: Scholar
Schreybers study unaligned magicks and use them to protect that which their studies and themselves. They do this via positional magic - placing objects in specific places to let the energies flow where they will.
All esoteric energies flow. They are generated, then move through available conduits, creating often invisible flows, some of which are massive and spread around the world. A schreyber learns to sense the flow of these energies and use their own position and the positions of special objects to neutralize aligned energies, amplify unaligned energies, and create a status quo of energy within a space. With that, within that, they find the neutralizing energy, which they wield to control the space. All esoteric energies come in five categories: elemental, celestial, fey, infernal, or unaligned. Neutralizing energy is an energy defined by its unalignment.
They learn to do this via decades of study, research, and scholarly work. They wield this magic specifically so that they can preserve the works, objects, and magicks they are studying. They are keepers of many magical tomes, scrolls, and objects that are the focus of their work, and these are often susceptible to dangerous magicks.
To be a schreyber, one must reject all aligned powers within oneself. As a living thing, a person always has a lifeforce, and to completely reject it would mean death. But a schreyber finds ways to dampen it when using their powers. Similar situations exist with beings who have other powers inherently. The methods used to reduce or reject aligned powers within oneself vary by species, culture, and time period, but they always involve a meditative practice and having their bodies in specific positions. If they ever use an aligned energy or even use an object with significant amounts of that energy in it, they must go through ritual cleansing of some kind.
There are four formations:
-
That which amplifies unaligned magicks
-
That which neutralizes elemental magicks
-
That which neutralizes popular magicks
-
That which neutralizes imperial or popular magicks
The four formations may be done via the body (or other living bodies), through the shape of a structure, or through the location of objects. Energies flow toward areas where they aren't, but also to areas where their opposites are if there are conduits for them to travel through. The formations create invisible conduits through space and affect the flow of energies by capturing them in spots where they cannot escape, then letting them fade in these sealed areas.
Positioning bodies, including one's own, requires the most effort to work, and schreybers typically avoid this by simply not allowing bodies into their workspace, other than their own (which has been prepared). They focus on positioning objects instead.
If the schreyber cannot unalign their own bodies well enough, they can use the shape of a structure and its materials to the same effect, but only by knowing the proper conduits for various energies. While there are many materials that serve as conduits for different, specific energies, a schreyber tends to focus on the five broader categories: water for elemental, mirrored glass for celestial essences, gold for infernal essences, feathers for fey energies, and dragonscale for unaligned energies. They need to position the conduits near the energy source, have a method of moving the conduit from one place to another if it is not large enough or shaped properly to connect source to target, and have a target area protected by the right materials to seal the energy once it is captured. The key is, as with all works of the schreyber, to have enough neutralizing energy to neutralize or amplify the right energies, all while forming zones where energies can be stopped.
