Elemental Metahumans

Magical humans with inherent elemental powers.

Fulmenian

Metahumans who absorb lightning.

  • Lifespan: 70-100 years
  • Diet: Electricity or common mortal fare
  • Habitat: Anywhere
  • Socioeconomic Status: Privileged oppressed

Fulmenians appear to be average humans.

All fulmenians absorb electricity as sustenance. Though they can eat as other humans do, they are energized and sustained by electricity as well. They are more prone to being struck by lightning, which feeds them for weeks at a time, and they can discharge it in smaller, weaker forms for a week after being struck. Their released energy depends on how much they have stored vs. how much they use for sustenance, so this can range from a small static charge to a moderate bolt.

If a fulmenian is in a crowd of people and struck by lightning, the lightning will only affect them. Because they are more prone to lightning strikes and because it is good for them, they usually go outside during storms.

Fulmenians are originally from the stormy coasts of lakes in the far south, but they have spread out and integrated into many human cultures. In their original culture, they have a focus on sport and sailing, taking risks, and communal living, but most in the Talunese city-states have fully integrated into the local culture, living as higher caste working class people with a little more interest in sports, sailing, or taking risks than others.

Meerian

Metahumans on the surface of the seas.

  • Lifespan: 70-120 years
  • Diet: Seafood-heavy mortal fare
  • Habitat: Open seas
  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed

Meerians have green and blue skin and hair of black and gold. They have finned legs and arms.

Meerians can leap like fish. They float naturally on top of the sea, their legs beneath the surface, their upper bodies above it, but they swim well and can breathe underwater and above. They are resistant to cold.

All meerians have keen senses of smell that can smell anything in water or air on the seas from miles away. On land, they often have a reduced sense of smell.

Meerians have a little control over sea water if they are floating in it, weakening the waves around them so they might function. They can also send out a shrill song that calls sea life to them.

They can't balance on land very well.

Meerians live in nomadic bands that live in platform cities, often made of driftwood, turtle shells, whale bones, and other random materials. They are a fisher/warrior culture that is defensive about their territory, but ready to share food and drink with strangers at the same time. They are known for their alcoholic beverages made from unexpected sources and raw food cuisine.

In imperial lands, they are hated and oppressed.

Mibdula

Metahumans whose form and powers change with the seasons.

  • Lifespan : 70-120 years

  • Diet: Varied mortal fare

  • Habitat: Anywhere with distinct seasons

  • Socioeconomic Status: Oppressed

Mibdulas change appearance with the seasons. They look human, but their skin and hair are different colors, and some features are different:

  • Spring: green and blue hair and/or skin, butterfly antennae, light yellow fur on their arms.

  • Summer: golden brown and yellow hair and/or skin, frog eyes, light brown fur on their arms.

  • Autumn: deep orange and dark brown hair and/or skin, owl-feather necks, black fur on their arms.

  • Winter: soft white and dark blue hair and/or skin, mammoth tusks, grey fur on their arms.

  • Wet Season: dark grey and light blue hair and/or skin, fish fins, no fur on their arms.

  • Dry Season: tan and pale yellow hair and/or skin, lizard tongue, no fur on their arms.

Their powers also vary by season:

  • Spring: feel the exact age of an object.

  • Summer: smell disease, injury, and malnourishment.

  • Autumn: hear whispers on the wind.

  • Winter: see temperature.

  • Wet Season: waterbreathing.

  • Dry Season: flight.

Mibdulas live in a culture of festivals and ceremonies that mark the passing of time and its cycles. They follow an ancient nature religion. If they live somewhere with wet and dry seasons, they will have a binary culture, but in the imperial lands, most are attuned to a four-season year. Some recognize as many as nine seasons, however.
