Benecarte

Type: Scholar

Benecarti are scholars who use celestial paper, paper made by and for the people, to record information, making it easier for all to understand.

To become a benecarte, one must find devotion to the people. Many scholars do not start out as exploited or working class people, but instead find sympathy and later solidarity with them, eventually betryaing their ruling class roots to serve the people. Others start as working class people who are taken in as servants and find their way into the work of scholarly study and learning. It is rarer to start from below however. Regardless, one must engage the work of a scholar as a method to help workers rather than to serve imperials (even if one is ostensibly serving the ruling class) to engage with the magic.

Once a benecarte has the right mindset, once they begin working for the people - openly or in secret - they will begin to find that their work is inaccessible and difficult for common folk to read or engage, and so they seek out methods to make it easier. Mundane methods give way to magical - in fact, help generate it - and as they do this, often guided by mentors, they begin to find themselves tested in their devotion (by mentors or spirits). After this, they either find they can infuse paper with magic to make it celestial, or they find special celestial paper to help share the information. This gives them abilities:

• Celeste paper: they may infuse paper with celestial magic, prepping it for their other abilities.
• True writing: they may write such that anything written will be known to be true.
• Aid comprehension: they may write such that those who read it will understand it more easily.
• Translative text: they can write such that the words they write will translate into the native language of anyone who reads it.
• External storage: they can write a memory, piece of information, or thought onto celestial paper and record it there, forgetting themselves, but knowing it is stored on the paper, to keep it safe.

Benecarti must keep their magic hidden or be persecuted as heretics or witches.

Magnatagliere

Type: Analyst

Magnataglieri are analysts of information who use celestial psionic magic to draw conclusions others might not understand. They learn to use this magic not via deep research or study, though they do both of these as well, but by gathering experiences and learning from them. They wander the world for years, finding new things, helping others, sharing thoughts and philosophies, and gaining wisdom. As they do this, usually under the tutelage of a mentor, they meditate on and study their own experiences, finding insights into them and using that knowledge as they go along.

Magnataglieri do not use their magic or their wisdom for imperial purposes, but to help others in need, especially the oppressed, exploited, or abused. They spend years wandering and learning, and eventually, they begin to find their minds clear easier and focus easier, giving them strange insights when they read or speak to someone. Eventually, they are tested by their mentors and taught special abilities:

• Telepathy: they can communicate telepathically.
• Deep reading: anything they read, they may engage their whole mind to read, seeing things in it that others would miss.
• Wise counsel: they can give others advice psionically that is easier to understand and therefore easier to act upon, because it is pure thought; an instant piece of advice that gives bonuses to others.
• Saffron insight: named for the yellow light that surrounds them, this is their ability to analyze multiple flows of information at once and glean knowledge from them, letting them read multiple books at once, listen to multiple conversations at once, etc.
• Strategic method: they may take a few moments before engaging in any set of actions to organize them in the most efficient way possible, reducing time and difficulty.
• Spear of knoweldge: they may sacrifice information or lore to create a psionic weapon to fight with.

Magnataglieri work for the people, giving out free advice and counsel where needed, and only advise the imperial powers if forced to - and then only mundanely and with the needs of the people in mind. Many have been killed as witches or traitors, refusing to serve, as they gain reputations as wise folk and then refuse to serve.

Occhioleg

Type: Researcher

Occhiolegs are researchers who tap into celestial light to see things in the information they study that might be hidden or lost. Like benecarti, occhiolegs usually start as ruling class or servants thereof, as most who work in research must be rich enough to know how to read. They must, however, find their way to serving the people and betraying their class. Those coming from a working class background are rarer.

Occhiolegs find the art in words and knowledge, and they draw from it celestial light. They study arts, but they rarely engage in them. Instead, they study and learn, research and discover, preserve and critique. They annotate and analyze it. After years of this, they begin to see it more clearly, and the celestial light comes to them. Often guided by mentors, they are tested in their devotion to the people before they are allowed to learn to wield it, but once they pass these tests, they begin to gain special abilities:

• Illuminating script: they can write with light, scripting things only visible to those who are not imperial or making what they write more easily read.
• Crystal sight: they can make their vision sharper and more keen, noticing details others would not, especially when researching.
• Anylamp: they can touch any small, mundane object and make it shine, creating a small lamp.
• Prismal book: they can turn the words in a book into light and store them in a prism.
• Epiphanic glow: they can draw upon the celestial light and have an epiphany, which causes them to glow and share the epiphany with anyone whom the light touches.

They study the arts primarily, but they can research anything. It is only researching the arts that fuels their magic, though.
