Celestial Mongers

Those who use celestial or popular magic to trade, buy, sell, or engage in commerce.

Giustaffare

Type: Merchant

Giustaffari are merchants who build trust in the communities they serve, trade with open accounts, and only take when it is necessary. They are buoyed by the magic generated from the trust they build and from the support of their communities.

Giustaffari learn to wield their magic from mentors in their community, often their parents, who raise them to earn trust in difficult and complex ways. It's not simply about being honest or keeping promises, though those are both vital. It's about going the extra mile to fulfill a promise. It's about being honest but also compassionate. It's about listening when others might not. It's about being fundamentally trustworthy, keeping confidences with care and knowing how to treat people with respect in a way that keeps them safe. If one is not raised this way, it's possible to learn as an adult, but it comes easier for those raised in it. Eventually, one learning this comes to find that they have magical, empathic senses. When this happens, they begin to be tested for their magic, and they will eventually have dreams, visions, or experiences wherein the powers of the people visit them and guide them and test them. If they pass, they gain special abilities:
  • Empathic sense: they have a mild ability to sense the emotions of others.
  • Trusted credit: they can give or loan something to others and be paid back in full either by that person or the community they support somehow.
  • Paying forward: any kind deed they do, especially in context of their trade, will come back to them narratively (earning the player a token to spend to evoke another NPC to be the one paid forward down the line).
  • Bond of trust: they can magically bond with someone they deeply trust, sharing communication, protection, and healing.
  • Reliable return: they can mark some items in such a way that they can be loaned, lost, stolen, given away, or otherwise not in their possession and always return to them after a while, perhaps with many untold stories in them.
Giustaffari are merchants. They buy and sell (with some exceptions) with the imperials, but they give and trade with the people. They may specialize in certain goods or have a general store, but they never specailize in things harmful to the people.

Munificottore

Type: Grocer

Munificottori are grocers who tap into the magic of the Good Harvest to provide bountiful produce and other comestibles for the people.

The Good Harvest is like the Sacred Hunt. It is a magical cycle that is designed for a sustainable form of survival, a response to imperial hoarding. It is the sharing of bounty rather than the hoarding of wealth. It is the providing for all rather than the enriching the one. It is a harvest produced by, reaped by, and used by the entire community. Munificottori draw magic from it by being a part of the cycle that shares the Good Harvest with the people. They are adapted to a more urban setting, or they are those from rural settings who travel into the cities to spread the bounty.

To tap into the Good Harvest, the munificottore must either be part of planting and reaping it, or they must prove themselves worthy of it somehow. If they do the former, they are more able to tap into it. If they do the latter, they must face the power of the Good Harvest's spirits. They are tested either way. They must know the bounty of the harvest (the fruits and vegetables they trade), how it is grown, how to tend it, how to reap it, how to preserve it, how to make it last, how to make sure everyone gets enough. And they must never hoard or otherwise make a profit from their harvest.

If they prove worthy of the Good Harvest, they gain certain magical abilities:
  • Share and share alike: if they share some of their produce with another oppressed, exploited, or abused person, something equal to what they shared will be shared back or to another in need within a day.
  • Bountiful harvest: they can multiply what is harvested to meet the needs of their community, but the cost is sometimes a bit of their blood.
  • Gathered seeds: any seeds they gather from the harvest will be enriched to better provide the next harvest.
  • Unburdened load: if they are carrying produce from the harvest on their backs or in their wagons, it will be lighter than it should be.
  • Equal measure: they can innately measure out equal parts of what they have so everyone gets some of it without even trying.
They may sell to imperials or buy from them if they must, but they do not use their magic to help them.
