A roc (or rukh) is a white bird so large it could hold elephants in its talons (which it often did, for food). It is closely related to the thunderbird, garuda, & simurgh, & it is said to be distantly related to the Phoenix. Although rocs can be easily tamed if raised from birth, it takes enormous strength to control one in order to fly it.
