Description A ravener appears to be a one-winged anthropomorphic vulture that is dried out and malnourished to the point of being nearly skeletal. Their single wing takes the place of one of their arms. The other arm ends in a rusted scythe. They have no eyes.
Procreation Raveners are created through a ritual of hunger energy and arnum.
Esoterica Raveners are beings of hunger energy. They are incapable of using any kind of celestial or aetherial energy. Sometimes, they use misfortune, desperation energy, doom, brown aether, and cacophony.
Special Powers The scythe hand of a ravener consumes the nourishment of their victims. They can fly with their strange single wings, and they sense those who are well nourished.
Weaknesses Nourishment, hamasat al-sahra, conflueverant, prasinofos, hvitdogg, and mijjit can harm them. Water is like poison to them.
Maleficing Powerful users of hunger energy can create, control, or summon raveners. A follower of Fysalida Aera usually fasts until they are unable to physically function, and then other followers torment them with various offerings of food that they cannot touch, until the hunger drives them into a psychotic state. At this point, a ritual of prayer and physical torture occurs to transform them, invoking the Name of the main wielder of hunger energy or of a powerful being of hunger energy by inscribing it in the target's flesh. This can also be done to an unwilling target; they simply must be starved first.
Culture

Though most raveners are created via ritual by followers of the One-Winged God, they are not enslaved. Traditions states they are set free to bring blight, famine, and drought to the world. Often made in small groups, raveners live in flocks in barren wastelands on the eastern coast of Ansulym. They fly along highways and coastlines and attack victims, waiting until just after their victims have fed. Each flock is led by a leader called a vyrek.

Unlike many other abominations, raveners often form their own new raveners. When a new ravener is spawned, they are left near a civilized area. If they can hunt and feed well, they will live long enough to seek out their own flock. If they fail, they usually are killed by those they seek to feed off of. Once they join a flock, they are usually forced to be a scout, the most dangerous role. Eventually, they will gain enough strength or respect to take on a different role in the group. The most common roles are frailthing, hunter, and priest. As they do not have clothing, sex, or genders of any kind, roles in the flock tend to focus on where they will find their next victim.

Each flock views other flocks as competition, and they often clash with one another. Battles are not uncommon, and they will commonly take slaves. Slaves can earn a spot in the flock if they prove useful, but most end up just being devoured. Raveners are extremely territorial.

Because water is a danger to them, they have burrows they use to hide from the rain. These burrows are dug into solid rock formations that stand above ground level so that the rain does not pour into them. Because they live in dry wastelands, this is rare, but it is enough of a danger that they live in fear of it. Clouds are viewed as harbingers of death.

If a ravener finds themself outside the wasteland, they are either very powerful and can handle the moisture, or they are panicked and probably going to die.

Religion Raveners believe that Fysalida Aera, the One-Winged God, whom they call Vyrenetek, controls the wind, the sands, and the stones. They believe he is a force rather than an individual, and that he takes form only in things that cannot provide them nourishment, save when he appears as the One-Winged God. He only does this when he is displeased and intends to punish. He is a harsh, cruel Divine who demands of them extreme discipline. Discipline means serving the vyrek, abiding no incursions into territory, and never touching water. If they meet his standards, sustenance will come their way. If they fail, he will let them starve. Starving does not kill them; it simply makes them suffer. They believe that there are other forces in the world that are antithetical to the One-Winged God. These come in the form of rain, which kills them. Death means nothing; there is no afterlife.

Mortal Interactions Raveners are much sought after by worshipers of the One-Winged God; they are viewed as angels, direct servants of the god. They themselves do not view themselves that way, however. Others view them as dangerous predators; those who must travel near their territories bring water to protect themselves.
