| Procreation | Pucai reproduce sexually with each other, other fey, and mortals. They also sometimes reproduce asexually, creating new pucai out of giant toadstools or common animals, altering reality to create children. |
| Esoterica | Pucai are beings of mischief resonance, paradox, flux, poioumenon, and dream energy. Like all faeries, they are users of The Tradition, a form of poioumenonic lore empowered by dream energies. They also use recursion, emotional resonance, karma, symbolism, yahas, spirits, entropy, fortune, misfortune, mana, ethereal energy, some forms of aether, radiance, fate, doom, dumaqu, and mystery. |
| The Tradition | Pucai have these basic fey powers:
A puca can shapeshift their natural form by putting on a mask, taking one of the above-listed forms. They can create illusions for any sense by covering the part of their body that senses it (holding their nose, covering their ears, closing their eyes, rolling their tongue, or putting their hands in their pockets or wearing gloves). They can cast cantrips (minor spells of any energy) by throwing small objects on the ground. They can view the threads of fate by plucking their own hairs and weaving them. They will take crops left over after Samhain, rotting anything still ripe after they eat. Each of their forms has its own special power:
Pucai can bring good fortune to those that please them by leaving a coin or scrap of metal behind. These objects will protect the user from accidents. If they leave a cup of precious metal behind, it will fill with water that brings happiness, but they do this only rarely and for those most deserving. Pucai can use special rhymes to alter the physical form of others; they can use ancient songs to change the glamour of others. They can alter reality entirely if they gather to collectively recite certain songs or rhymes. |
| Glamour | Pucai can glamour themselves using certain ancient rhymes; though they have physical forms they can change as well, their glamours are more broad and varied. They do not come with any special powers, however. |
| Weaknesses | If they do not speak their True Name backwards into that same mirror in a minute, pucai lose their True Names. They have a fortnight to recover it or they become targets of the Wild Hunt, corrupted into another kind of fey, or turn into a hag or boggin. Iron or steel will bind a puca into powerlessness. An iron horseshoe nailed over a door will bar a puca from entering a house. If someone rides them in their horse form with iron spurs, they will throw the person and refuse to let them ride again. Most pucai detest tobacco smoke, and it can be used to stave them off. This is just a preference, however, and not a weakness. Using a special bridle made of three hairs of the puca's tail will control them; using iron spurs will affect them powerfully. They are also weak to imperium and quaestus. |
| National Culture | Though they are a very small nation, the pucai are very powerful. Once there were many, but Ages of oppression have left their numbers few. Pucai live in small, rural, complicated mercantile communities led by a council of elected officials and a council of elected elders. The council of officials is known as the tionol. It is made up of representatives of different traders' groups. Representatives are elected every 20 years. The council of elders is known as the comhairle arsa. These elders are elected for life by the ancient tribes of puca society. The tribes are collections of extended families with ties dating back many Ages. Every puca knows their tribe, even if they do not live anywhere near their old tribal lands (long ago bought and traded amongst them or to other nations). There are 41 tribes. The traders' groups are more modern and mercurial. These groups, called comhlachas, are mostly associations of small business owners and financiers, and their members vote for their representatives. As such, the tribal councils are more representative of the lower classes and by far the more progressive of the two. Puca communities often produce silk, blackberries, posies, mushrooms, and milk, which they trade with each other and other nations. These are the main products of their comhlachas. Other common roles in their societies are warriors (who are loyal to their tribes), soldiers (loyal to their comhlachas), mystics, millers, silversmiths, tanners, weavers, artists, poets, singers, farmers, herders, healers, information brokers, traders, and builders. Because most pucai are workers who enjoy their crafts, they often begrudge the limitations placed on them by those who own their land and resources. Many pucai choose to leave and see the world once they have saved enough wealth, and many others go out seeking fortunes to bring back. Some still simply leave and find their way with their incredible powers. Many become hermits or lone wanderers. As tricksters, pucai are known for their cleverness and cunning, and though the majority of them are harmless or light-hearted, enough of them engage in violent, dangerous, or outright exploitative behavior that they have a bad reputation among other nations. To those outside the puca nation, their world is very misunderstood. They try to keep the interworkings of their nation to themselves, usually out of respect for their tribal histories, which reflect the abuse and violence they once experienced at the hands of other nations. Like many oppressed nations, pucai were once enslaved and persecuted. The memory of these eras lives on in many older pucai especially. Despite this, they take pride in who they are--and their powers--and will identify themselves openly to others. In puca society, shape and form are temporary. Pucai use all of their forms and many glamours regularly, considering their various shapes to be practical tools to use and their glamours to be reflections of their preferences and identities. Gender is expressed largely through glamour; many genders are recognized and fluid. Pucai will use their bull, horse, and humanoid forms for work, often operating as animals of burden or transportation, or using the height and strength of their humanoid form for manual labor, then go home and glamour into more apparently ostentatious forms. Many tribes have preferred forms culturally, but all pucai have and often use all forms. Eagle, wolf, and raven forms are used for travel, as well as the horse form. Terrier and cat forms are used for pest control and sometimes recreation. Hare and goat forms are favored by warriors, and their fox forms are favored by mystics. Their humanoid form is used to communicate with other nations. Their goblinoid forms are considered their "base" form, as it is the one they take on upon being given their Names. There are two major festivals in puca society: the first day of the second month, known as Amadan Aibreain, during which they celebrate pranks and tricks, and the first day of the ninth month, known as Samhain, during which they must be civil. |
| Seelie Culture | Most powerful of the pucai, Robin Goodfellow, met the King of Faeries one night in the woods, and there he played three tricks upon him. First, he lured the king's horse away, getting it lost in the thick of the wood. Second, he presented himself as the same horse, taking the king for a wild ride, ending with the king being thrown off at his own camp. Third, he, when the king sought to take a seat upon a log, removed the log and had the king fall. At this time, the king, befuddled and outraged, amused and bemused, made demand of the puca to identify himself, and so he did, proudly proclaiming himself the greatest of all puca. As he appared before the king, he made rhyme and pun, jape and tumble, and delighted the fey lord. He was offered a place at court in exchange for the return of the king's horse. Intrigued, he agreed for the span of seven days to play jester. To the court they rode, and the next morning, Robin Goodfellow was presented to The Queen. Never before had the Puck, as he was known, been awed. Never before had he been smitten. Never before had he been nervous. So impressed was he that at first, he could not even remember the simplest rhyme; fortunately, a rude courtier made comment upon his appearance and silence, and he rose to the moment, making mock of the pompous fey. What followed was the greatest performance of any jester at The Queen's court. The Queen, herself privately awed, declared then and there the pucai were to be protected and cherished at her court, and offered Robin Goodfellow a permanent place. He agreed for his own part, and he brought word to the tribes of the offer. The tionol immediately agreed, seeing lucrative opportunities, but the comhairle arsa were more measured. They took 41 days to consider, and eventually only agreed because of deep-seated fears of enslavement and persecution from old enemies. So the pucai became part of the Seelie Court and favored amongst it as servants, jesters, and traders. Their cunning and power made them very prominent in the Court, second only to the sidhe. The tionol constantly jockeys for power in the Court, and the comhairle arsa seeks to counter their ambitions and protect their culture in a constant struggle of assimilation vs. authenticity. |
| Other Courts | Because of their incredible power, pucai can make themselves a part of any court if they so choose, but they have deep memories of persecution under the Unseelie Court. It is rare that they join it. The Kindly Court requires good behavior of them and has the power to back it up, making them reluctant to join it as well. Otherwise, if they choose to leave the Seelie and join another Court, they are often welcome. |
| Mortal Interactions | One of their favorite pranks is to take mortals for wild rides. They bring good fortune to mortals who help them, torment those who invade their territories, and use their powers to make the world their own. They do not hesitate to let others know who and what they are. |
