Lawrence was a detective in the cities of Malhuin during the Age of Miracles on First Shem. He rooted out the hardest mysteries, found the darkest secrets, figured out the trickiest puzzles, and solved the most perplexing cases. He became a legend in his own time, until a woman came to him asking him to infiltrate a spy ring that had kidnapped her husband. Lawrence took the case and went to work, but within a week, he was embroiled in a spy game involving Srisians, the Galdish, the Theresans, the Sathers, a few caerthorins, and some angry faeries, a pair of Gifts, and a book of secrets so potent that it couldn't even be seen directly. Lawrence unraveled most of it and found the book, but he got cornered in the end and had to pull a desperate trick.

He opened the book.

He read the Name.

He became the Dedicate of the Veil. He became stealth. He became mystery. He became the one who sees all secrets.

Ever since, no secret could elude him. He became an even greater detective than before. He started taking harder jobs, working for gods and Immortals. By the end of First Shem, he had found the only mysteries he could not crack were secrets kept by gods, and even then he sometimes figured them out.

On Second Shem, he set to relax, but it never quite works out. Currently, he's on the case of Starfall.
