Race: Hupia

Over-race: Undead

Classification: Undead

Family: Phantasm

Sphere: Undeath

Origin: Quilia made these from the souls of her more devout followers

Lifespan: Immortal

Habitat: Anywhere

Food: None

Description: They appear to be faded versions of their former selves, sometimes in a nimbus of unearthly light. They never have navels.

Procreation: None. Hupia occur supernaturally from people who fear the afterlife, much like phantoms. However, hupia were people who sought more influence in the physical world, did not fear or understand the agony of stronger undeath, but flinched when they first felt it, thus coming out as hupia.

Magic: None

Special Powers: Hupia cause unease in those who see them, but cannot communicate clearly (it sounds like moaning). Being spectral, they can phase through solid objects. The touch of an hupia causes panic & pain in the victim, but rarely can it kill (power: 7). It is a 9 undeath power to turn someone into a hupia.

Culture: Hupia dwell in the area they returned to from death. This is usually where they lived, where they grew up, or where they died. They generally just lurk, trying vainly to return to the life they lost, until dealt with, but sometimes, they will attempt to drive those that have taken over where they dwell away.

Notables: The most notable hupia to date was the hupia of one Daniel Jamison Greene of Lamerickton, Dhun, on First Shem. He was a rich & powerful merchant who had retired to his old country home in Dhun, where he bought a noble patent & set up a small estate. Being a merchant, he was actually wealth faithful, but Dhun was heavily light faithful, so he converted to fit in. During his later years, the harsh teachings of the Dhunic light church caused him such grief & terror that he feared his afterlife would be the Hells. Thus, when he died, his fear brought him back as an hupia. Because he returned, his surviving family was burnt at the stake as undeath worshippers, despite the fact that this was not so.
