Description

From Lovecraft:

“These figures were seldom completely human, but often approached humanity in varying degree. Most of the bodies, while roughly bipedal, had a forward slumping, and a vaguely canine cast. The texture of the majority was a kind of unpleasant rubberiness.” (“Pickman’s Model”)

“It was a colossal and nameless blasphemy with glaring red eyes, and it held in bony claws a thing that had been a man, gnawing at the head as a child nibbles at a stick of candy. Its position was a kind of crouch, and as one looked one felt that at any moment it might drop its present prey and seek a juicier morsel. But damn it all, it wasn’t even the fiendish subject that made it such an immortal fountain-head of all panic—not that, nor the dog face with its pointed ears, bloodshot eyes, flat nose, and drooling lips. It wasn’t the scaly claws nor the mould-caked body nor the half-hooved feet—none of these, though any one of them might well have driven an excitable man to madness.” (“Pickman’s Model”)

Description is where comparison to Lovecraft's ghouls ends, however.

Procreation

Follows the mother, with other goblins. Halfbreeds may occur outside of race.

Magic

One in five million have soul magic. One in five hundred thousand have heart magic. Mind magic, body magic, & void are possible. Faith is not uncommon.

Special Powers

A ghoul has an extremely keen sense of smell. They have digestive systems that can handle almost any degree of decay & rot, & they have enormous strength in their jaws. They have an affinity for nuckalavee, though they rarely find any. They tend to stink horrendously. Their young are called shugghouls, and they are hairless, pale, clawed beings with oversized snouts and tusks on their faces and twisted hooves on their feet. They are weaker, but not by much, than their adult forms.

Weaknesses

Harvest magic or faith can harm them.

Culture

Ghouls live in brutal packs, feasting on the dead & dying, the rotting & the decaying, scouring hill country & graveyard, wasteland & urban sprawl, for carrion to devour. They are not unintelligent, but they rarely bother to speak. The shugghouls go through a Rite of Feast at about the age of 13, during which they are allowed to glut themselves on a raid. If the feasting doesn't go too far and kill them, they will begin their adolescent growth spurt and become full ghouls.

They are referred to sometimes as the Scavenging Horde, or simply Scavengers.
