Funayurei (also Mojabune, Boko, Umibozu, Ayakashi, Boat Ghost, Kechibi)
vengeful ghosts at sea

Most funayurei appear to be the faded, spectral forms of what they were in life. Some are huge, called umibozu. Some are glowing phantasmal boats (usually collective souls), and some float above the water. Others haunt unsunken vessels. From a distance, they appear to be mere lights. Some appear as hanged sailors or men in armor.

Funayurei use ladles called hishaku to fill boats they are haunting with water, sinking them. Those they kill are at risk of also becoming funayurei.

People who die in shipwrecks sometimes become funayurei if their deaths were traumatic enough or if their souls were already corrupted.

Sailors know many ways to protect from funayurei. Methods include throwing onigiri (rice balls), incense, flowers, summer beans, ashes, woven mats, burnt firewood, washed rice, clean water, or dango (mochi dumplings) into the sea, preparing a ladle with no bottom, stirring up the water with a stick, speaking one's Name at the phantasm or claiming to also be a funayurei, and throwing a lit match or torch at it.

Funayurei are more likely to appear on rainy days, during a new moon or a full moon, on stormy or foggy nights, or during festivals honoring ancestors.

Funayurei can use their glowing presence to appear as bonfires by the shore to lure boats to dangerous waters and sink them. If they appeared as a ghost ship, they would use their appearance to draw victims away. They can make boats disappear into heavy fog, make compasses malfunction,

If sailors stop their vessels and watch the funayurei instead of fleeing from it, the funayurei will sometimes flee.

Funayurei who drowned because of heavy armor sometimes cling to the sides of ships or boats and use their helmets as if theyw ere hishaku.
