MENSCH DENOUNCES STUDIOS

Calls for Director Challenge!

Dir. Cameron Mensch, well known independent filmmaker, spoke at length yesterday about the studio system in Belle Point to local press, calling the studios "greed-driven monopolies" and "mouth pieces for the oppressors."

Dir. Mensch called for all directors in the Guild, of which he was recently re-admitted to after an exile of five years in Galdun, to strike against the studios, who he says have put the artistic power in the hands of producers who insert commercial products and political messages into otherwise acceptable films. That this comes in exchange for high quality production values, he says, is no excuse for "selling out."

Dir. Mensch challenged all working directors who were opposed to a strike to create a short film, on their own or with studio backing, to be played against a film he himself would make.

"I hereby challenge any studio-backed director to make a film that the Critic's Guild would herald as much or more than my next short. I also call on those with the nerve to make their own films to present their own shorts to the Critics, and if any studio film comes out on top, I'll never speak out against the studios again. But if they don't, then the studio-backed directors should stand with me and the other independent directors and strike against those who cheapen our work!"

Dir. Mensch, a known anarchist, achieved fame with his film FORM, an experimental piece that won him many awards as well as international acclaim. His staunch anti-studio approach made him a pariah in Belle Point for years, but the recent struggles with unions have left the studios weaker and given Dir. Mensch a foothold in the city.

CORANIZO RESPONDS TO MENSCH

Horror director insists studios still on top!

Dir. Seamon Coranizo responded within hours to Dir. Cameron Mensch's challenge to directors for a strike with a prepared statement S'rayium, Tishar 25.

"This never-was of a 'director' who has had the fortune to be allowed into our prestigious guild has moved too far. As Secretary of the Guild, I must say he does not speak for us," Coranizo stated. "But his challenge will not go ignored--my film will be ready in two weeks."

Dir. Coranizo went on to say that he was so confident in Dir. Mensch's imminent failure that the Guild would pay the wages of all striking directors should a strike go forward.

Dir. Coranizo rose to fame with films like NIGHT OF THE LYCANTHROPE. Recent works, like ALDERGAST, have seen a distinct rise in his skills as a crafter of horror.

TWO FORMER COMEDY STARS IN TRAGIC TURNS

One murdered, one missing!

Comedy stars Cecil Brooks and Dir. Fred Shole, both formerly of the acclaimed Unexpected Elf Group, have met with tragic circumstances in the past two days. Police are investigating the murder of Dir. Fred Shole, whose work includes AN HOUR AT THE CIRCUS and GRIFFONTEETH, and the disappearance of actor Cecil Brooks.

Dir. Shole was found at 6 p.m. in his Uptown apartment, apparently shot in the head. Initial reports leave few details, but photographs taken by the TELEGRAPHER show a perfect equilateral triangle of bullet wounds in the middle of Shole's forehead and a bowler cap firmly placed upon his head. The significance of these details has not been confirmed.

Police are investigating the possible connection between this and the disappearance of Brooks, who was reported missing by his wife, Marletta Brooks. He was expected back home two days ago. When he did not return from a trip to the store, Brooks became worried, but was forced to wait the requisite ten hours before a missing persons report could be properly filed.

Police say anyone with information on either of these crimes should contact them immediately.

Both worked with Dir. Alsandro Ipanym and others in the Unexpected Elf Group, lead by Dir. Archie Challan. Each has gone on to greater solo fame, but recent times have resulted in rumors of a reunion.

STUDIO DOCTOR DEAD IN OFFICES

Irritodoctor died of apparent heart attack!

Dr. Roman Earl, famed studio doctor to the stars and leading irritomedical practitioner was found dead in his offices on Monbudhium, Tishar 24. Initial police reports indicated possible foul play, but a coroner's examination revealed cause of death to be a heart attack.

Dr. Earl, known for his treatment of all the greatest stars, was 47, but medical records indicate a weak heart from birth. He was raised in the local orphanage, but he went to school on a scholarship.

Funeral services will be held Uqtium, Tishar 29 at 11 a.m.

CONSTRUCTION DELAYS STAGNATE STADIUM

New stadium not due for another two years!

The stadium scheduled to be constructed in Lion's Gate has met with yet another round of delays as the construction company contracted to build it faces charges of criminal negligence in the destruction of the El Arbol Park treants.

Due to city statutes, no contracted company may have any suspicious criminal activity in its past when contracting with the city. As such, the new investigation once again leaves the city without a contractor to build the multi-million dollar sporting arena. The delay could cost the city as much as $7 million.

City officials and construction representatives refused comment.

WOMAN ATTACKED IN RIVERSIDE

Fifth victim of Smoking Man in three months!

Another woman has come forward and claimed to have been assaulted by the Smoking Man, a criminal known only for the stench of wood smoke about him and the intense heat of his contact with women. The TELEGRAPHER does not report victims' identities in these cases, but warns all women not to travel alone at night, especially in Riverside or Lion's Gate, where most of these attacks have occurred.

This is the first attack this month, and again, it comes in the last two weeks of the month. Police join the TELEGRAPHER in calling for extreme caution in the next two weeks, as the pattern of this depraved individual is to strike twice in the final two weeks, often within days of each other.

Anyone who has information should contact the police immediately.

LACEA WYNSOME STILL MISSING

Radio contact avails to nothing!

Pilot and aviation hero Lacea Wynsome has still not reported in during her flight from Belle Point to Malhuin on Palhur. Officials have sent out rescue and search airplanes and fuzzlers to the region she was suspected to be in when she last contacted the mainland.

Experts say it is unlikely that if her radio equipment has failed that she could still be in the air. Most of her instruments rely on a precise electrical and radio-related system, and any failure could mean disaster for her. There is, however, some chance she is still in the air.

Wynsome first gained fame for her solo flight from Belle Point to Evernorth on Ailanea in a mere 6 hours, the fastest and only solo flight by a female pilot between the two continents. A wind elf, Wynsome is no stranger to the skies, having grown up on a griffon ranch as a child and being one of the first to learn to fly airplanes after their invention in 1897.

Her brother, Mallovio Wynsome, thanks all those who have sent letters and prayers offering support in this trying time.

VIOLENCE IN THE STREETS OF BELLE POINT

Criminal war underway, reports police!

The sudden increase in violent crime on our streets late at night has now been officially attributed to a war between organized crime groups in Belle Point. In the past three nights, a total of 25 people have been killed, including a group found dead outside the Skree on the Savanna Temple, where a grenade was said to have gone off.

Police warn people to stay off the streets at night and to report any suspicious activity immediately.

EARTHQUAKE LEAVES HUNDREDS HOMELESS, DOZENS DEAD

Priests of Stone and Earth warn more on the way!

The earthquake yesterday at 11:30 in the morning left much of La Bella in rubble, and caused citywide damage to parks, industry, temples, and landmarks. A confirmed number of fatalities topped yesterday at 98. Early city damage estimates range from $1 million to $10 million in damages, including the unfinished stadium in Lion's Gate (now delayed by contractual issues) and Union Station.

Fr. Idrokh Krokk of the Stone and Rock Temple said, "The 5.5 evaded our detection due to an lapse by one of our brothers in his duties, and he will be up on charges in the next week. However, we can firmly state this is only the start: more earthquakes are expected in the next few weeks, and worse than what we just went through. People must brace themselves. If nothing else, a donation to our temple will help ensure their homes against damage."

MEET THE CANDIDATES

Ugly race is getting uglier!

The upcoming elections on Secomal 23 have been heating up. Here's the current rundown of contenders for the various offices and information on each:

MAYOR:
  • Incumbent mayor Jonas Watley, Dove Party, recently made a speech on race relations in the city, calling on people to come together in an eloquent but poorly received bid to calm the local tensions. His platform of research into the water problem has not brought many results, and his social programs to combat crime coupled with his upping the police budget have met with public approval, but results have varied.
  • President Armande Green of Aurdog Studios, independent, has made a push for the mayoral seat. His recent activities have included the scandal over the destruction of the treant grove and the donating of $1 million to Bankerton Reserve for renewed water. His platform is focused mostly on business and the support thereof, giving tax breaks to innovative businesses who will aide in the crises of the city. His connections to worldwide businesses and governments give him an edge in achieving this goal, but many question the conflict of interest his occupation suggests.
  • Adef al-Hajim, former city attorney under Hawk Mayor Duram Cobb, announced his candidacy days ago and has the full backing of his party. His speech last week at the Unified Guild dinner stressed his support of the city's finest traditions and his distinctly aggressive tactics to address the water problem and the crime problem. His platform focuses on a return to traditional values like dignity and freedom and a fierce and almost belligerent approach to water rights.
  • Rivena la Corsa, union organizer and Modern Novan Socialist candidate, announced her candidacy at a rally in a La Bella soup kitchen. She has her party's full backing and a history of fighting for the rights of poor and working class people. Though she has no governmental experience, some view this as a positive factor, while others point out it will make it difficult for her to get things done in Belle Point. Her outspokenness is also a questionable virtue. Her platform calls for a worker-driven approach to business, a variety of social reforms that she says would lessen crime by alleviating the stresses on those who are prone to commit crimes, and a rationing method of dealing with the water crisis coupled with further magical research.
  • Bonafice MacGregor, independent candidate and business man, is a Kearin transplant who has embraced the culture of Belle Point. His work as a railroad executive brought him here, but he quickly moved on from that to city contractor on traffic and planning, eventually becoming a full city employee. He is responsible for many highway projects in the region, as well as new housing developments in La Chinasio. His platform includes strong support for the police to fight crime, including provisions for witness protection, a new and improved magical crimes division, and tougher laws on drug use and theft. His proposed water-flow system would divert water from various oases to the city, and his desalination plants he proposes would also bring in new water.
  • Maxwell Tomas Urqhart is from Kerupen, but has lived in Belle Point for five years. His work as a mercenary captain gave him much military experience, but his jobs in Belle Point have all been as a security leader for the major studios. Recent activity has seen him fired from Aurdog Studios. He is a representative of the National Social Agenda, and his platform includes the segregation of all races into pure and impure categories, which he says will please the Gods and bring back the rain, as well as reduce crime.
CITY COUNCIL, District 1: Uptown, parts of La Chinasio, and Riverside
  • Yohemeini Broyle, incumbent Dove Party councilman, who has been described by his opponents as "Mayor Watley's lapdog" and "the Uptown cobra," is well known for his ability to get the best for his district, even at the expense of others.
  • Ejuaro Manuelo, Dove Party challenger, who is running as a spoiler against Broyle's alleged corrupt reign of this district's seat. He has the backing of many Uptowners who feel recently Broyle has favored Riverside more than is fair, due to their greater business revenues.
  • Harmony Mills, Hawk Party challenger, who is a former member of the Mills Sisters singing group, the international nightingale singing sensations. Her traditional stance comes as some surprise to those outside the entertainment industry.
CITY COUNCIL, Distrct 2: Little Tenzanai, Little Iello, and El Dimeo, with part of north Old Rourke
  • Kame Jintao, Tenzanese-Ienovan businessman, who is running in the Hawk Party. He is the first Tenzanese-Ienovan to ever run for public office, but he has a strong base in his home neighborhood.
  • Norton Cooke, Dove Party challenger, from Old Rourke. His platform focuses on a community-based approach that would call for a series of referendums to bring change to the area.
  • Qu'shav Ullaros, a sand elven transplant running with the Modern Novan Socialists. She organized water rallies in El Dimeo, in which the public came out to share water with the less fortunate, and has become the leader of the Community Water Initiative, a local nonprofit for the redistribution of water.
CITY COUNCIL, District 3: West Belle Point, Old Rourke, Welmington, The Point, Suncoast and Gravitas
  • Thera Dyle, independent incumbent city council woman, who has a moderate stance on almost every issue except temple rights, where she runs a hard traditionalist stance, and laissez faire business practice, where she is notably free.
  • Winston Mockerie, former comedian and current Dove Party challenger, he has a hard time making speeches without a series of bad puns. The crowds love him, but his stances run the party line.
CITY COUNCIL, District 4: Burzene, Akazad Alley, Winchester, and La Bella
  • Zomander Brax, oddly named Hawk Party challenger who has a name many thought to be gnomish. He assures everyone that he is a wild talent and that he is a true Hawk in stances.
  • Carpathy Grippytop, backed by Marshall Ironhook, an independent gnomish candidate who has rallied the gnomes behind him. His stances, as far as the TELEGRAPHER can discern, involve stilts and engines.
  • Ferian al-Roh, Modern Novan Socialist running out of La Bella, Ferian is a former warden of Hashab Prison who turned to the hope faith after his tenure there ended. He is now a private investigator in his spare time, though he usually works for free for the unfortunates in La Bella. His stances echo La Corsa's.
  • Inez della Corsino, Dove Party challenger who has just entered the fray in this district, which shows to be the tightest race in the season, della Corsino has the backing of her party and runs the party line, but supports the industry of Winchester without hesitation.
CITY COUNCIL, District 5: The Wall, Main Street, Bankerton, Union Station, and the rest of La Chinasio
  • Lombarda Marishka, Dove Party challenger, the only person yet running for this seat. He has the full backing of all the studios, and few are willing to oppose him. His stances run the party line.

FIRE AT BOXHOUSE ORPHANAGE LEAVES IT EMPTY

Owner and house leader found dead!

Police are investigating a mysterious fire at the Boxhouse Orphanage that has left at least five dead, including house leader Wyndam Pembleton.

The children were said to have been driven to extremity by the fire, and have all been taken in by the Home's Home Temple in Gravitas. The police have not yet confirmed rumors of strange religious paraphernalia found there, nor of sightings of the MONSTER WEREBAT spotted days ago in the city at the house.

Many of the city's prominent figures have connections to the Boxhouse, including Armande Green, who was adopted from it in 1899 by Green Eye Cameras' founder Darren Green. Police could not say who would inherit the grounds nor what the fire's significance might be.

POLICE LEADER CHARGED WITH CORRUPTION, SON SUSPECTED IN ARSON

Silver Cloak Corbannon on the run!

Silver Cloak Major Graham Corbannon was outed by unnamed sources as one of the many corrupt members of the police force taking money from organized crime families. In a possibly related incident, a house in El Dimeo was burnt to ashes yesterday, and the name of Corbannon's son Gabriel was found written in the ruins, possibly as a calling card.

Maj. Corbannon has vanished in the wake of the accusations, and his family refused to comment. Police officials stated yesterday that they would pursue all corruption in their ranks with the rigor they pursue all crimes.

Gabriel Corbannon is known to be a member in good standing at the Stuntman's Guild, but he has been missing from set for the past several days, according to studio spokeswoman Donna Mverik, producer on the new Ipanym project. He has been let go for contractual violations.

Again, no comment was available from the Corbannon family. Reports indicate daughter Juruda Corbannon is also missing.

NEW IPANYM PROJECT SHAPING UP TO BE COMEDY HIT

Dir. Ipanym returns to his roots!

Dir. Alsandro Ipanym has reported returned to his roots on his newest project, a romantic comedy adventure from Aurdog Studios entitled THE PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE. Starring Noble Clarkson and Tako Miiji, Dir. Ipanym's new feature has a cast of newcomers supporting it as well: Julia Laird, a student at Velmond University; Tilluel, a dryad of El Arbol Park; and a series of other unknowns.

Despite a rocky start due to strikes and union struggles, the filming is moving at a great pace, insiders say, and the stars are enjoying slipping back into familiar shoes alongside each other. Laird, a pretty girl starring as a princess alongside Tako, says she is learning a lot from the starlet.

"She's really taken me under her wing," Laird said. "And she showed me all sorts of good tips. It's been a real pleasure working for her. She has a real knack for comedic dialogue, certainly."

Laird, who has received special leave from the University to do this film, had shown up for the now infamous open auditions for Dir. Seamon Coranizo's next film, which was thought at the time to have been derailed by the writers' strike. When one of Dir. Ipanym's people called all the prospectives over to his lot, Laird says she was lucky enough to be near the front of the line.

"He just walked down the line asking people things like 'give me anger' or 'show me sadness' or 'you just lost your wallet' and things like that, and anyone who was good he asked to take a part. After a while, he took the best of those he had interviewed, and I was lucky to make it in. There was a lot of talent in those lines," Laird said.

Laird has not decided if she will continue acting after this film, but she asserts that she loves the work.

LOCUST ATTACKS CONTINUE

Other sightings and supernatural attacks reported!

Two more individuals were killed by locusts yesterday, and three others reported sightings of supernatural monsters in the past day. Following a series of sightings around the movie studios, police are calling in local Staff of Justice Laine Chase to focus on these events and bring national resources in. In lieu of the recent spike in violent crime, insiders have applauded this move, and the local populace has responded positively.

Chase said, "My experience in dealing with supernatural forces will serve me well here. Young as I may be, all Staves are trained in dealing with these things, and I have dealt with my own fair share in recent years. I am confident I will have this solved quickly."
