Accipitrary

Type: Avianist

Hunters who bond with hawks and falcons via the ritual of the hunt. Accipitraries are much like survivalists, but they specifically attune to hawks and falcons. Most mortal societies once depended upon hunting for their survival. Many still do. Hunting is a sacred rite for many because it represents survival. Hunting is an ancient conflict, therefore, and one of the most powerful in the world. While there are cultural variations in how the ritual of hunting works, there are commonalities in how tapping into the magic of survival works:

• A ritual initial hunt in which they offer their own blood
• A specific prey caught or killed on their first hunt that they attune to for life, always a prey that hawks or falcons also hunt
• A period of attuning to that specific prey and use every part of it
• A period of attuning to that specific prey by being prey, becoming deeply vulnerable
• A follow-up hunt or hunts in which they attune to a predator, some kind of hawk or falcon
• A period in which they define their range or territory

Specific powers will vary depending on the prey and predator they attune to, but they will have variations on the following:

• Camouflage: some form of STH bonus coming from blending in with their territory, coming from their prey attunement.
• Patience: some source of patience for waiting on their prey, often coming from their prey attunement. This often takes the form of circling.
• Determination: some source of WIL for not giving up in seeking resources to survive.
• Tracking: some form of heightened abilities while following a specific prey.
• Senses: heightened senses based on their predator attunement, usually eyesight.
• Blood: blood magic invocation by offering some of their own gives bonuses to tools or weapons.
• Companion: an animal companion that joins them when they are most desperate, usually their hawk or falcon attunement.
• Range: bonuses while within their territory.
• Special tools or weapons: reflecting their territory and/or their hawk or falcon attunement, involving feathers or talons.

All survivalists must be resolved to the hunt as their form of survival and not take meat they did not earn. This does not mean refusing to accept a meal, but that they cannot eat if they have not done some work for their range, predator, prey, or their own survival within the last seven days. Self-reliance is a source of power for them, and though they can accept help from others, they will start to lose magical power if they rely solely on others - unless that other is their hawk or falcon companion.

Their companion is always a local hawk or falcon (or one local to where they first became an accipitrary if they are from elsewhere). They will have the ability to communicate with it, see through its eyes, and direct its actions (with consent).

Chitinist

Type: Arthropodist

Note: The GM has a phobia of a certain kind of bug (r**ches - I can't even write them), so those specific bugs will not appear in this game.

Chitinists draw magic from the exoskeletons of arthropods. They cast the chitin and exoskeletons as others might cast bones, using them for divination, but they also gain other magic from them.

Chitinists spend years studying chitin-casting. Their magic comes from understanding the way the magic works and connecting to their own bones. They perform exercises and stretches that emphasize their bodies' connections to their skeletons. If they lose teeth, they save them, crushing them up to use in their magic. But mostly, they study arthropods, mostly insects and arachnids, and learn how their bodies work. They practice for years, analyze and study them, both via what is written about them and via direct interaction. After years of study and practice, they learn how to read the exoskeletons as they cast them.

Casting exoskeletons and chitin is much the same as bone-casting, but smaller and more often crushed and powdered. They learn to read the patterns, the colors, the effects. Different arthropods give different meanings:

Players would choose 20 of these to start with. They decide which ones they use before casting a divination, and then roll their casting to see what they find out. Different combinations create many different effects for upcoming events. These vary so greatly, it will be a language developed between player and GM as the campaign goes on.

Scalesmaester

Type: Reptilist

Scalesmaesters use reptiles' scales to channel dragon magic. This description assumes an unaligned dragon. For fey, celestial, or elemental, consult the GM.

To channel dragon magic, one must prove oneself to a dragon. Proving oneself to a dragon requires living their values and passing their trials. The five paths of the dragon are the paths of Discipline, Power, Majesty, Territory, and Accumulation. Scalesmaesters are those who train and study under a dragon or under other scalesmaesters, learning to work with scales and reptile skins, then learning to channel dragon magic into them, usually making objects of faux dragonscales by making reptile scales with dragon magic in them. The trials they must pass are as follows:

• Trial of Discipline: they must prove they can follow orders and a routine of exercise and study.
• Trial of Power: they must prove themselves strong enough to survive the energies they will wield and the dragon’s demands.
• Trial of Majesty: they must prove they have a sense of authority and the ability to lead.
• Trial of Territory: they must prove they know and respect the dragon’s territory.
• Trial of Accumulation: they must prove they know all of the previous trials again.

Once they have passed the trials, they are given draconic magic that they can infuse into any reptilian scale or skin that they use. They use these to make clothing, armor, or accessories, or they can store the magic in the skin or scale and unleash it later as pure draconic fire.
